How MS Word's "Track Changes" Function Can Make It Easier to Strengthen Your Copy

When you submit copy to a client, you can be sure they'll make changes. In the old days, the client would mark up your copy in red ink and mail it back to you. But now, when almost all your contact with clients will be through email, they're more likely to make their edits and comments by using the "track changes" function of Microsoft Word.

Here's how it works on most versions of Word – but it's definitely worth taking the time to learn how it works on whatever word-processing program you have:

  1. When "track changes" is on, changes your client made to your copy will be shown in color (usually red) and underlined. Deleted copy will have a line drawn through it.
  2. To turn on "track changes" and review your client's edits, left-click "Tools" on your toolbar, left-click "track changes," left-click "highlight changes," and make sure "highlight changes on screen" is checked.
  3. You have the option of accepting or rejecting any changes your client has made, but if you're a beginning copywriter, you should accept them all.

Experiment with "track changes" to get a feel for this very important function of MS Word. Knowing how to use it will increase your productivity … and your professional image.
