Former “Retiree” Starts New Career As
Full-Time Copywriter and Is the Latest
Addition to AWAI’s “Wall of Fame”
Congratulations to Shelby Beckett … the latest addition to AWAI’s “Wall of Fame”!
For years, Shelby called herself a “retired,” self-employed author, writing and self-publishing several books. When she joined AWAI’s copywriting program in 2007, her original aim was to learn how to promote her work. But as she began studying, she found herself wanting to become a “real” copywriter, to take advantage of the greater opportunities this career offered.
“I wasn’t sure anyone would hire me, since I was already 71 years old,” says Shelby, “but I made up my mind to try.”
Then, last July, Shelby saw an opportunity announced in The Golden Thread from Jenny Thompson, head of Agora’s Healthier News division. It was for writers to submit a complete package on any product. Up to 15 would be selected to come to their office in Baltimore in August to audition for a full-time copywriting position with the company.
Shelby decided to go for it! And in less than a week, she received an email with the subject line, “You’re invited to Baltimore.”
So Shelby went to Baltimore for the weekend audition, and the rest is history … she was offered one of the full-time positions.
“This was too wonderful an opportunity to turn down,” says Shelby. “So we sold the house and moved to Baltimore two months later. I started my new job in October, a couple weeks after my 72nd birthday.”
Today, Shelby says she loves her job!
And, she offers this advice to anyone who wants an exciting and rewarding new career:
“Don’t ever give up on your dreams. Don’t believe people who tell you, ‘You can’t do that’ or ‘You should be retired’ or ‘You’re too old to change your life.’ You can do whatever you make your mind up to do, as long as you believe you can.”
