Weekend Homework and Social Media Jobs

Two years ago the lease was up on my car and I had decided to buy a new one instead of leasing again.

I had never noticed cars so much in my life …

Everywhere I drove, I paid attention to the cars around me. What styles I liked, what colors I hated, what I could picture myself driving…

I was “tuned in” to the world of cars!

Has that ever happened to you?

Well ever since my teleconference with Nick Usborne on Tuesday, I’ve been “tuned in” to social media campaigns.

During the call he gave some examples of how companies have been using social media:

  • Ford didn’t launch its new Explorer at a major car show, it launched it on Facebook.
  • Comcast doesn’t handle customer service over the phone, it does it through Twitter.
  • Local retailers no longer have to print and distribute flyers door-to-door, they use Groupon.

And now I see social media campaigns everywhere!

Car companies, fast food, airlines, clothing stores, sports teams, television stations, social causes …

EVERYONE is using social media to market the products or message.

Even my favorite sushi restaurant is running a campaign on Facebook!

And, now that I’ve gone and told you this … I bet you’re going to be “tuned in” to social media too …

So we may as well make the most of it!

This weekend when you’re watching TV, browsing the internet, eating at your favorite restaurant, or running errands around town, take notice of all the social media efforts you see running.

How are they using social media in their marketing? What are they trying to accomplish? Which social media outlet are they using?

Consider it a little bit of homework!

Because regardless of what type of writing or freelance work you do, social media will impact your life soon if it hasn’t already...

As a copywriter – regardless of your niche – you will undoubtedly be asked by a client: “Can you help us with our social media campaigns?

As a resume writer, you’ll be asked to help someone get a social media job. (And boy, are there plenty out there! I’ve gone ahead and posted a bunch again below today.)

And as any other type of writer, your readers are using social media. So whether you want to connect with them, promote yourself and your work, or simply keep your finger on the pulse of real people to say on top of what’s hot, it’s time to jump in and get involved.

Like I said earlier this week, social media is here, it’s big, and it’s only getting bigger.

Whether you use it to help you with your writing, or to profit from knowing how to use it, it’s time you start reaping the benefits of this powerful tool.
