Rebecca Matter here — checking in to see if you’ve done your writing for the day. (If you’re just getting back in the swing of things today, you can catch up on what we’re doing this week by going here.)
Yesterday I had one of those days where you sit down to write, and nothing happens. I froze.
Yep — I was faced with writer’s block.
“Just write something,” I told myself. “It can be complete rubbish, you just need your fingers to start typing.” (Advice my mom gave me years ago when she was tackling her latest novel.)
“I write at least four pages every morning,” she told me. “And I don’t second-guess what I’m writing. Even if it’s a conversation between two of my characters that I don’t think will be used in my book, I don’t stop until I hit four pages. Sometimes I throw it all out. But often there’s at least something that makes it into the book.”
So I sat down and wrote out a few new lead ideas that could be used in future articles or promos. When I finished my 1,000 words, I felt victorious.
Then, I popped over to the AWAI Article Archive to see what we have on the topic of writer’s block. I figured it was a challenge you may face from time to time too.
I came across quite a few things, but felt that these three articles really provided a lot of great tips.
The first is a list of 14 tips for banishing writer’s block by Don Mahoney that are very useful if you hit writer’s block when writing a promotion.
The next one, by Dan Kennedy, gives you three ways to be proactive so you don’t get writer’s block in the first place.
And then the last one is written by AWAI Member Cela DeLaRosa. She gives you a trick for breaking through writer’s block that I had never heard before, but am going to give a shot next time it strikes.
Keep these pieces handy for the next time you are hit with writer’s block. And if you have any tips of your own, post them here.
Tomorrow I’m going to share with you a way to turn this writing habit you’re forming into a business this year …
I figure if we’re writing every day … why not make a little money from it?
