Is there Opportunity for a New Generation of Social Media Experts?

As for whether there is an opportunity right now for writers and copywriters who learn social media, absolutely there is.

I know a lot of people think the train has left the station, and that there are already more than enough Social Media Experts out there.

Well, I have been hearing that same claim for years now. In fact, over four years ago, I was talking with a freelancer who wanted to get into social media marketing as a business niche, but was convinced she was too late.

Far from being too late, she was actually way ahead of the game.

The truth is, the business side of social media continues to grow at an astonishing rate.

To support that claim, let me share some figures with you …

  • Worldwide, 86% of companies have a presence on Facebook and Twitter, while over half use YouTube.
  • $3.08 billion was spent to advertise on social networking sites in 2011.
  • Social media advertising spending will increase to $8.3 billion by 2015.

If we look at North American figures instead of worldwide figures, over 90% of companies have a presence on social media.

Companies have to be active on social media because that is where their customers are spending more and more of their time. This is still a growth industry, and billions of dollars more are flowing into social media marketing every year.

Now for the other side of the coin.

While most companies are investing heavily in social media — because they know they have to — most of them don’t know what they’re doing, and don’t have the resources to do a decent job.

Here is an interesting excerpt from a report by eMarketer:

“Only a quarter of all U.S. small businesses (20-99 employees) and a third of midsized companies say they use social media ‘to engage with customers and prospects in a strategic and structured way.’ Another 20% of both groups say they use social media, but in an ad hoc manner.”

Do you see the opportunity here? Literally millions of companies in North America alone are in desperate need of help. They have created social media pages for their companies, but don’t know what to do with them, let alone how to make them work effectively.

Still not convinced?

Here is another figure for you. According to econsultancy.com, about 50% of all companies outsource their social media work. That means millions of companies are looking for smart Social Media Experts to help them out.

So … millions of companies know they need to be active on social media … only about 25% of them feel they are using social media effectively … and over 50% are outsourcing social media work to freelancers.

As I said at the beginning … there is a huge opportunity in the social media marketing business, and it is still growing.

By the way … that freelancer who thought she was too late four years ago … she decided to take another direction. She really felt she was too late to the party. It would be interesting to see where she might have been today if she had chosen to dive into social media at that time.

As for you, what are you waiting for?

And as I said yesterday, this doesn’t mean switching from being a writer to being a full-time Social Media Expert. This is about adding value by combining both skills — writing and social media. It’s also about having another skill to offer, and a new revenue stream.

Online writers and copywriters who really know social media have a huge competitive advantage, and are extremely valuable in the eyes of their prospects and clients.

And as all this data tells us, the party has just started. You can — and really need to — join in.

Henry Ford once said, "It's been my observation that most people get ahead during the time that others waste."

This is your chance to get ahead. The market is ripe for those willing to jump in. Embrace social media now — add this new skill to your toolkit. I can assure you that you won't regret learning more. And when you look back, you'll be glad you didn't waste any more time.

Social media expertise can only be a good thing for you and your business.

Now, that’s it for today.
