A Six-Figure Year for this B2B Copywriter

AWAI member Brian Whitaker has recently seen some very tangible evidence of success as a Business-to-Business, or B2B, copywriter: he just bought a new car with proceeds from his freelance projects.

All-in-all, Brian’s first year as a “solopreneur,” as he calls himself, has been quite a ride. He’s completed 29 projects for seven clients. The smallest project paid $500; the largest $20,000. And all told, he’s made $114,784 in the last year.

“It feels great to be successful. I’m glad I can support my family, and the lifestyle changes have been an enormous plus. But, I can also see much more potential,” says Brian, an AWAI member for three years. “I’m still a relative newcomer to being a solopreneur, and there’s so much untapped opportunity I need to connect with. I’m not dwelling on past successes, I’m still oriented to the future.”

Brian’s background is in sales and marketing for high-tech companies, on the corporate side. So when he decided to go freelance as a copywriter, B2B was a natural fit. He’s done sales presentations, brochures, web writing, white papers, video scripts, and much more, primarily in the data storage industry.

“The biggest project was a campaign for a new product launch. I had to devise the market positioning, messaging, write web copy, brochures, training presentations, email marketing, blog posts, and coordinate the efforts of several engineers who were writing more technical content,” says Brian.

Attending last year’s B2B Copywriting Intensive gave him a leg up as well.

“The Intensive gave me advice on improving my website that led directly to two small projects and a new client,” recounts Brian.

He’s busy. But he still embraces the freedom and flexibility of freelancing.

“I’m an avid fly fisherman, so once a week or so, I take two hours over lunch, head to the local river, and spend time communing with nature,” says Brian. “Also, last year, for the first time in my working life, I took off every Friday and organized three-day weekends with my family.”
