AWAI Member Changes Course … and Finds Her True Calling

After AWAI’s FastTrack to Copywriting Success Bootcamp and Job Fair in 2012, Karen McCauley was fired up to start her copywriting career. She chose healthcare marketing as her niche and even secured several regular clients.

But then, a simple request turned her freelance career on its head. And Karen couldn’t be happier.

“A friend asked me to help her with her resume. I am a ‘retired’ staffing company owner, and I created a resume for her that resulted in four phone calls, three interviews, and two job offers,” explains Karen. “After that success, I thought ‘hmmm’ maybe that is my niche, and I should refocus on resumes and helping job seekers, since it was my former life's work …”

Like many new freelancers, Karen realized that leveraging existing skills and experience, from past careers or hobbies, for example, is a great way to get a head-start on your pursuit of the writer’s life.

Karen soon picked up AWAI’s Pro Resume Writer Program and founded Juno Career Services (www.junocareerservices.com), bringing her daughter, Beth Pearce, in as a partner. Karen reports that business has been steady since then, and the duo is set to bring in $70,000 this year.

They offer resume, cover letter, and thank you letter writing services, as well as LinkedIn profile set up and career strategy consulting.

“We have expanded into the Hire Heroes program – working with returning vets to create resumes which transition them from military to civilian careers. We also offer discounted resume services to their families,” says Karen. “Additionally, we are setting up workshops for colleges and other entities offering resume critiques, job search tips, and more. Plus, a large international search firm has contracted with us to provide resume services for their candidates.”

Karen and Beth’s goal is to bring in $200,000 in 2014, which, based on the business they’ve done so far, they’re confident they can do after they hire some freelancers to pick up the workload.

But already the financial success this mother-daughter team has experienced has paid off big time. With the money she was able to save thanks to this extra income, Beth had enough for a down payment on a new home for her and her daughter.

Way to go Karen and Beth! You really are an inspiration to us all. And be sure to keep us posted on your progress – I foresee big things for Juno Career Services.
