AWAI Member Finds a Breakthrough Pursuing One of His Life’s Passions

Not too long ago, Jerry Bures was struggling. He was unemployed and trying to get his writing business off the ground.

Things have since turned around for Jerry as he explained to AWAI’s Events Director Denise Ford recently:

“Last we communicated, I was unemployed from my JOB, struggling to get my copywriting business making money, and dreading the thought of looking for other employment.

“Who'd of thought that just one month later, I'd have my breakthrough. I'm again struggling … but struggling to keep up with all the writing assignments!

“I know it's an ongoing effort in client acquisition, but I did feel a connection to the many articles I have read on your website about copywriters quitting just before their breakthrough. Those are so right on, I can now only smile (not that I was considering quitting … but the magic of breaking through is awesome to experience).

“Again, on your end, so many thanks. Things are looking better here, and I appreciate all you do for those of us who dream.

“Oh yeah, my former employer (an engineering company) is banging on my door to return now that things have picked up at work. It's so neat to politely tell them my freelancing is going well, but I'll keep in touch … -:) yeah, right!”

Great news, Jerry. We’re so happy for your success.

And the icing on the cake is that Jerry is able to work in two niches he’s very passionate about: natural health and self-help. The first was prompted by ongoing health issues in his family; the second by his lifelong interest in the subject.

His rise started at AWAI’s 2012 FastTrack to Copywriting Success Bootcamp and Job Fair, where he landed his first client — who’s given him regular work since. And, he recently landed two new clients. He’s in talks with a third.

“I'm primarily working for natural health companies who market both supplements and information to their subscribers to help them live healthier lives,” says Jerry. “One new natural health client is just starting to market products more this year, so it'll be exciting to help them establish themselves as a go-to resource for not just information, but products too.”

One of Jerry’s new natural health clients is considering putting him on retainer, which is a great option for freelancers because it brings in a guaranteed income each month. As his career moves forward, he’s enjoying every minute of working in niches he loves.

“I'm wrapping up a sales letter promotion for a natural health client to promote a special report on alternative methods to wipe out joint pain. The neatest thing is getting to work with all the copy pieces needed to see this promotion through from start to finish,” says Jerry. “Another small project for a new self-help client is to initiate a new blogging website that teaches parents how to raise kids to be more conscious of themselves and others by modeling effective leadership characteristics.”

His best advice for his fellow writing professionals just starting out?

“Those who are connected, succeed. So participating in training sessions and programs … contributing on forums … showing up at live events … all that networking is key,” explains Jerry. “In fact, my connections at AWAI’s Bootcamp are directly responsible for three of my four most recent clients.”
