How to Tap Into AWAI’s Culture of
Shared Success

There’s nothing like crossing the finish line at a local running event. It doesn’t matter if it’s a marathon, a half marathon, a 5K, or even a 2-mile walk …

There’s the satisfaction and pride — the elation — of knowing you did it. But there’s also camaraderie and a sense of belonging to this tribe of people who call themselves “runners.”

In the races I’ve participated in, I’ve felt connected not only to those who are running at my pace — more or less alongside me — but also to those ahead of and behind me.

Let me explain …

Along the way, there’s plenty of encouragement and friendly competition among those of us on pace with each other. That’s to be expected, right?

It was the faster runners who surprised me when I first started participating in these races a few years ago. Those who finish first (at least some of them) tend to circle back and encourage the rest of us to finish. It’s pretty cool.

Of course, we all also connect at the “party” afterward, where we have snacks, rehydrate, and celebrate our collective success.

Substitute “writing” for “running,” and you have a picture of AWAI’s culture of shared success …

The Generosity of Those Ahead

There are some very successful writers in the AWAI family. Some — like Bob Bly, Clayton Makepeace, and John Forde — are well-known and even have been named “Copywriter of the Year” in the past. Others — like Will Newman, Nick Usborne, and Steve Slaunwhite — are more quietly successful but just as generous about encouraging others who have less experience.

I had the opportunity to chat with Clayton Makepeace at Bootcamp, and I asked him about it. He said when AWAI asks him to do something that will help a new generation of copywriters, he does his best to say, “Yes.”

Clayton has shared helpful productivity tips and copywriting techniques during AWAI webinars and at live events. He had personal conversations with many of the “up and coming” copywriters at Bootcamp, and he seems genuinely to enjoy encouraging others along the path to success.

With Master Copywriters like “the big guy” Clayton Makepeace setting such an example, it’s no wonder so many AWAI members are generous and willing to share their advice with others who aren’t quite as far along in their careers … yet.

Helping Those Behind

It’s not just the Master Copywriters and authors of AWAI programs who are generous with sharing their experience and advice. I’ve received tremendous encouragement and support from my fellow AWAI members, too. Some I’ve met at a live event like Bootcamp or the Web Intensive, while others I’ve only “met” online through social media.

Still others I feel I know through their writing in the various AWAI publications.

They’ve all helped me in one way or another. For example, I’ve gotten a helpful tip about breaking up with a client from Rae Robinson, a strategy for getting a variety of clients from Steve Roller, and inspiration to dream really big from the stories of copywriters like Joshua Boswell and Guillermo Rubio. Sometimes it’s been simply knowing there are others out there going through similar “stuff.” It’s great to know I’m not alone!

And then there’s the AWAI staff. Everyone I’ve interacted with — from Katie and Rebecca … to Heather, Denise and Jackie … to Barb, Cameron, Jackson and Jason — has contributed to my success.

The Party at the Finish Line

There’s no doubt the AWAI family likes to celebrate success. We definitely like to have fun and celebrate when we get together in person at live events. But there are online celebrations, too …

Like when an AWAI member writes in with a success story, or when a member is added to the Wall of Fame … The folks behind the scenes at AWAI publish these stories and share them with the world.

Yes, it’s their business. And, yes, when members succeed, AWAI succeeds, too …

But it goes beyond that. They’ve encouraged and developed a culture of shared success within the AWAI family of experts, staff, and members. It’s there. It’s just up to us to tap into it.


Be an Active Participant

Here are some things I’ve done, and you can, too:

  • Connect on social media.
  • Enter contests and challenges.
  • Submit course homework assignments for review when you have the opportunity.
  • Participate in the AWAI Groupsite forums specific to particular programs.
  • Attend live events like Bootcamp and the Web Intensives. (2014 will be my third straight year of attending both a Web Intensive and Bootcamp.)

Like with anything else in life, what you get out of your AWAI membership is what you put into it. The opportunities are there …

You Can Have It All

Zig Ziglar said, “You will get all you want in life if you help enough other people get what they want.”

Katie and Rebecca don’t just believe this, they live it. As do the rest of the AWAI family.
