Promote Yourself – Your Life Is Now

So far this week we’ve covered the secret to winning a new project with a spec and how to go beyond the “first date” with marketers. Today, we’re going to unlearn a bit of manners …

My mom taught me it isn’t polite to brag. For example, she was proud — but always a bit mortified, I think — when I told my aunts and uncles I was getting straight A’s.

Well, sorry Mom, but I have to break your rule now that I’m in business for myself …

And you do, too!

Your Life Is NOW! Action Step #3: Promote Yourself

To take charge of your writer’s life NOW and land paying gigs, you need to promote yourself.

At Bootcamp this past October, Ilise Benun (author of The Art of Self-Promotion, and co-founder of Marketing Mentor) had a great session about self-promotion, and one of the things she said was this:

“Your positioning isn’t about you. It’s about what your clients need to hear.”

We have to toot our own horns so our prospects and clients know just how we can help them. If we don’t, they won’t know.

It really is as simple as that.

For example, I’ve written articles for my wine copywriter blog and for wine industry publications about retaining club members by keeping them engaged using social media and newsletters. These articles position me as an expert who can solve a problem my clients have.

Some Self-Promotion Strategies

If you haven’t already figured this out, AWAI really wants you to succeed at this business of being a copywriter. They want you to live the writer’s life.

So I wasn’t surprised to find a LOT of content in their archives about self-promotion.

Here are a few articles from the AWAI library that provide some self-promotion strategies:

The golden thread in all of these strategies is you have to tell people — prospects — what you do. And you have to show how your expertise is the solution to their problem.

Pick One and Do It

Pick just one thing to do to promote yourself. If nothing speaks to you in any of the articles I mentioned, browse through AWAI’s library of archived articles. If you’re a subscriber to The Barefoot Writer or a member of Wealthy Web Writer or the Professional Writers’ Alliance, look through those archives as well.

But as soon as you find your one thing, stop reading and start doing. Implement just one thing this week. You can circle back and implement another as soon as you’re ready.

Start with one and get that ball rolling.

Ready, set, GO!

Because your life is NOW … Write On!

I want to hear from you! Leave me a comment and tell me what you’re doing to promote yourself.

  1. Read your article for today. My biggest problem is finding the right people to market to. I teach very esoteric healiing practices and principles. I have a website, FB, Linked IN....but need to get physically to the people who want what I have to offer. How the heck does one find them? Thank you!!! Ria Swift

  2. Yes, Michele, it's good to let others know what you're about. For my part, I've started a blog: copywriters4businesses dot wordpress dot com, written 9 proposals to banks in my area, written two ads in the papers for my services, and I've started to write articles for a business newspaper in my country. All these steps are to position me as a freelance copywriter. I must admit that copywriting is relatively new in my country Ghana. I've a lot of work to do to sound the bells about it. I've started and I'm not stopping.

  3. This week's series has really spoken to me! The first thing that I am going to do to promote myself is to claim my identity as a writer to everyone that I speak to. I know that's what I am, now I am going to truly focus and see how much of the writer's life I can begin to live this year. Friday is my birthday and that is my gift to myself! I'll keep you posted!
