Promote Yourself – Your Life Is Now
My mom taught me it isn’t polite to brag. For example, she was proud — but always a bit mortified, I think — when I told my aunts and uncles I was getting straight A’s.
Well, sorry Mom, but I have to break your rule now that I’m in business for myself …
And you do, too!
Your Life Is NOW! Action Step #3: Promote Yourself
To take charge of your writer’s life NOW and land paying gigs, you need to promote yourself.
At Bootcamp this past October, Ilise Benun (author of The Art of Self-Promotion, and co-founder of Marketing Mentor) had a great session about self-promotion, and one of the things she said was this:
“Your positioning isn’t about you. It’s about what your clients need to hear.”
We have to toot our own horns so our prospects and clients know just how we can help them. If we don’t, they won’t know.
It really is as simple as that.
For example, I’ve written articles for my wine copywriter blog and for wine industry publications about retaining club members by keeping them engaged using social media and newsletters. These articles position me as an expert who can solve a problem my clients have.
Some Self-Promotion Strategies
If you haven’t already figured this out, AWAI really wants you to succeed at this business of being a copywriter. They want you to live the writer’s life.
So I wasn’t surprised to find a LOT of content in their archives about self-promotion.
Here are a few articles from the AWAI library that provide some self-promotion strategies:
- How to Overcome the Fear of Prospecting By Janice Sakata-Schultze
- The “No Portfolio Portfolio” Strategy By Will Newman
- The “Scariest” Step on the Path to B2B Success By Lane Sennett
- The 3 P’s of Successful Networking By Michele Peterson (What can I say? I’ve successfully unlearned my “manners” when it comes to bragging!)
The golden thread in all of these strategies is you have to tell people — prospects — what you do. And you have to show how your expertise is the solution to their problem.
Pick One and Do It
Pick just one thing to do to promote yourself. If nothing speaks to you in any of the articles I mentioned, browse through AWAI’s library of archived articles. If you’re a subscriber to The Barefoot Writer or a member of Wealthy Web Writer or the Professional Writers’ Alliance, look through those archives as well.
But as soon as you find your one thing, stop reading and start doing. Implement just one thing this week. You can circle back and implement another as soon as you’re ready.
Start with one and get that ball rolling.
Ready, set, GO!
Because your life is NOW … Write On!
I want to hear from you! Leave me a comment and tell me what you’re doing to promote yourself.
