Increase Your Value While Saving
Time and Money

How to get AWAI Members more publicity …

It’s something I’m studying at the moment. I’ve noticed that, whenever we share the success AWAI Members are having, they seem to have even more success shortly thereafter.

So, I’m taking our publicity program to learn what more we can do.

What about you? What are you working on right now?

Rebecca Matter here with part two of my formula for a profitable freelance writing business – skill-building.

(If you missed part one, you can access it here.)

At any given time, you should be looking for ways to add new skills to your list of services and to improve the ones you already have.

It doesn’t matter what your niche is, if you commit to building and enhancing your skills for life …

  • You’ll automatically increase your value to your clients;
  • You’ll keep your skills up-to-date; and
  • You’ll have an easier time coming up with new ideas.

There are two challenges you may encounter, however, when it comes to skill-building …

The first is the danger of spreading yourself too thin between too many programs. It’s not easy to learn how to write case studies, sales letters, and grants all at the same time.

So, choose a writing program, finish it, and then move on to the next. This way, you’ll make true forward progress and can reap the benefits of your new skills faster, rather than only making a little bit of progress at a snail’s pace.

The second challenge is the possibility of wasting time and money learning skills you’ll never use.

This is where having a plan comes into play …

Today, I want you to spend time making a list of the skills you want to acquire and/or improve. Organize them in the order that makes the most sense for you to tackle. Then decide what program or training you’ll take to master each skill.

For example, if your chosen path is B2B, your skill-building list may look like this:

  1. High-Performance B2B (which, by the way, AWAI is having an awesome deal on right now – details here … )
  2. Case Studies
  3. White Papers
  4. Video Scripts

Or, if you’re going the web-writing route, your list may look like this:

  1. Accelerated Program for Six-Figure Copywriting
  2. Copywriting 2.0
  3. Web Intensive Home-Study Program (Also on sale this week! Details here.)

By having a plan set up like this, you’ll always know what’s coming next, so you won’t feel overwhelmed and become paralyzed by too many options.

Plus, you’ll be less likely to get distracted by any bright, shiny objects that may take you off your path, which means you won’t waste time or money on the wrong opportunities.

So today, I want you to put together your skill-building plan. And if you need help or want to share it with me, go here.

Tomorrow, we’ll tackle the third – and quite possibly the most exciting – part of my formula …

It’s the part that ensures you’ll have enough clients at any given time!

  1. I have not finished my accelerated program for 6 figure copywriting but I listened to the recent b2b call and immediately signed up for the course since that is the niche I've chosen. I'm a bit overwhelmed to be starting that course when I've not finished the accelerated course. Any suggestions on which course to focus on first?

  2. Hi Rebecca, Here's my skill-building list:
    - Complete Accelerated Program
    - Secrets of a Freelance Writer (Bob Bly)
    - Land clients in 21 days
    - Secrets of Writing High Performance B2B Copy

  3. Rebecca, I'm happy to report *progress*!!
So I've decided to begin with web copywriting.
Very much like the plan for web writers you suggested, I'm going to tackle the 6 Figure program first and after that the Home Study from the Web Writing intensive.
As for the third step, I'm unsure...I'll check out Copywriting 2.0 as you suggested
*Your* letters are extremely persuasive and I'm studying them as well! I mean, they got me hooked and continue to inspire me thus far!

    Thanks for your guidance!

  4. I'm in the same boat as MichelleG. Should I finish Accelarted course first before starting the B2B program or can I spend time each week on both?

  5. Spot on, Rebecca! I made the mistake & spread myself too thinly & was a mess. All the amazing programs AWAI has to offer - I bounced all over the place. I must have that ... That's for me ... I have quite a few and at one point hadn't completed any of them. I have now, and defined my niche and specialties. I'm now more focused & not overwhelmed & working with someone to launch my website. Thank you for this week's gems! (BTW - I did indulge & got the Publicist program ... fascinating!)

  6. Rebecca I finished the Six Figure Copywriting course plus I took the Companion Series. I want to now start the Web intensive home study course which I am purchasing next. Thanks for your guidance. Later on I would like to continue with the b2b course which I am also interested in studying. I am taking your advice tackling one at a time. Thanks!
