The Day My Life Changed Forever

This is such a special time for me. I am so grateful to Katie and all the wonderful people at AWAI who have made this dream come true for me. My dream has been to share what I have learned with others, to reach out to a larger audience and give them the gift that has been given to me.

The gift I'm referring to is a peaceful mind.

My mind wasn't at all peaceful when I was 21 years old and almost by accident ended up in a yoga class at Integral Yoga Institute in New York City. I was an out of work actress and a hard-working waitress at the time. Yoga was far from mainstream back then and I was leery of it. I passed their little studio every day as I was coming home from work and then one day, for some unknown reason, I decided to go in.

That day changed my life forever.

The moments of meditation at the end of the class opened the door to an inner self I had never known. The founder of the Institute was Swami Satchidananda, a very well-known yoga master from India, who was brought to this country by Peter Max and Carol King. The teachers told me if I meditated every day and that my intention each day was only to love and serve, everything I ever needed and more would come to me. I certainly had no life philosophy at 21, so I decided to give it a try.

Four decades later, I can tell you, with certainty, they were right! They had taught me a beautiful way to live. My life became beyond what I could have imagined back then and I am forever grateful. I still stick to this simple advice and it has truly brought out the best in me.

To make this present time even more special, it happens our program is launching on the same date as the Indian holiday of Guru Purnima, which in the Hindu tradition is a time to return with gratitude to your teacher. This year happens to be the centennial birthday of Swami Satchidananda and the Integral Yoga Institute is preparing a GlobalGarland in his honor. It is a worldwide offering from all those who have benefited from his teachings, our program is now a part of that Garland. The yogis say, when the student is ready, the teacher comes … I would be honored to be your teacher.

  1. This type of meditation is very much in need by so many people in our present day doings. But, so many people do not know much or even nothing about meditation. As such, this must be so structured to be taking place every now and than, say at least once every month or even twice a month.
You must through this program, be able to meditate if possible half of the entire world population. Human beings, to put it in a mild way, need it, to reduce the present day funny acts some people are involved.

  2. Have tried several times, attending & dropping out cuz I couldn't QUIET my mind. So grateful for this easy to follow program! Had a breakthrough on Day 13, have pretty much narrowed down to 1,2 or 3 possible directions. AM GROUNDED AS I LOOK FORWARD to the comforting continuity of this wonderful addition to the AWAI program. Thank you Katie for bringing us Annette!

  3. Carol King and Peter Max did not bring Swami Satchidananda to the US. Filmmaker Conrad Rooks did that. Peter met him upon his arrival. I think Carol King met him several years later in California, but I may be wrong about that.
