4 Ways YOU Can Profit From the Growth of Social Media
Over the course of the past few days, I’ve been telling you about how social media is quickly transforming the web.
In fact, this transformation is happening at such a speed that most companies are barely able to keep up.
Millions of companies need help with social media, and they aren’t able to find that help in-house. So, they’re looking for help from the outside. They’re looking for and relying on freelancers who know more about social media than they do.
And, here’s the thing … as a web writer … as someone who knows the web and knows how to write … you’re in an ideal position to step in and lend a hand.
If you can’t see how you could use your skills as a social media expert, here are four ideas to get you started:
Become a social media writer and optimization expert.
Social media is a content monster. Text, images and videos have to be created in very high volumes to feed its appetite.
Above all, companies need writers who understand social media. They need writers who can handle the volume of work required, and who know how to make content more “shareable.”
In other words, they need writers who can write website content pages that people are likely to share with others through their social stream.
Plus, of course, they need someone to write all those Facebook updates, Google+ posts, Tweets … and more.
Set up as a social media manager or strategist.
Many companies haven’t even figured out a strategy for social media yet. They need an expert from the outside who can step in and help them strategize their approach to the social web.
And, once the strategy is in place, they need a manager who can handle the process of planning and implementing their day-to-day activities.
That strategist and manager could be you.
Implement social media as a link in the sales process.
This applies to B2B companies in particular. Companies need to attract and engage with their prospects and then convert that engagement into sales.
Perhaps you already have some B2B clients. If so, they need your help in using social media to improve that process of engagement and conversion.
Use your social media expertise to grow your own business.
Freelancers are not immune to the changes being driven by the rise of social media. We have to pay attention, too. We have to learn all we can about social media marketing, and then use that expertise to promote our freelance businesses and attract more and better clients.
Personally, for my own freelance business, I use Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Google+ and YouTube.
The more I do, the more I learn. And the more I learn, the more value I have to offer my own clients when they ask me about social media.
That’s it for today.
Give some thought as to what might be the best fit for yourself … being a social media writer, being a strategist and consultant, or being a social media campaign manager. Share your story in the comments.
Then tomorrow, in my final article this week, we’ll look at some very specific, how-to approaches to landing your first social media clients.
