Three “Definitions” That Will Give Your Business Purpose

The simplest path to a successful, stress-free business is to have total clarity in three key areas — your goals, what you want (and don't want) to do, and who you want to serve.

Of course, this can be very challenging, especially when you're just starting out. After all, your immediate concern is making money.

The thing is, in taking the time to answer these questions, you'll develop a powerful focus and sense of purpose in your business. Giving you the results and income you hope for faster than ever.

Read on to discover just how powerful these three “definitions” can be for your business, and how you can go about getting them just right.

Define Your “Why”

Ever have a day where it seems like everything goes wrong?

Either you fight with a difficult client … are struggling to find any work at all … or just sit in front of a blank screen with no idea how to proceed. And all you can think is, “Am I cut out for this?”

If so, you're not alone. It's common for freelancers to have tough days. After all, you're developing a business on your own.

Well, the biggest weapon against those rough days is a simple, but often overlooked, one … Reminding yourself of your “why.”

I'm sure you have a major reason why you’re pursuing a career in web writing.

Perhaps you wanted the freedom it allows in your schedule … a comfortable income to enjoy the nicer things in life … or the ability to spend more time with your loved ones. Maybe all of the above.

Whatever it is, in order to maintain your drive, you should write it down. Write down your reason why. And hone it like you would an elevator pitch, until it perfectly reflects your dreams and inspires you to keep going.

As an example, mine is “to have the flexibility to pursue performing and support my family.” It takes a little time to get it right, but it's so worth it.

You'll end up with a powerful statement — an “affirmation” — you can plaster on your wall and recite to yourself every morning. Where others slow down and give up, you'll be continuously inspired to keep “trucking along.” Practically guaranteeing success in your business.

Solidify Your “Wants” and “Want-nots”

While having a “why” is vital to keeping yourself on track, it's not enough to get complete clarity and focus in your business.

As you can imagine, a freelance business can take a lot of shapes. When you work without a clear plan, you risk ending up with something you weren't hoping for.

The only way to ensure you develop the business of your dreams is to clearly define what you want and what you don't.

John Carlton talked about this during his presentation at AWAI's FastTrack to Copywriting Success Bootcamp this year. The idea of recognizing your options as a writer, and choosing which path you'd like to go down.

If you strive to be an “A”-level copywriter who commands huge fees and works with big publishing companies, then all of your efforts should propel you in that direction. If you'd rather focus on building a web copy business for mid-level companies, then great!

On the flip side, you may loathe writing lengthy sales letters or promotional bullets. Or maybe you hate the pressure of competing on the “A”-level and would rather stick with the Dan Kennedy route of tackling lucrative “low-hanging fruit.”

It doesn't matter what your preference is. It's your business — you can't be wrong.

What's important, though, is that you take the time to clearly define it.

Write down how you picture your business in three years. How much time per day do you want to spend on it? What kinds of projects do you see yourself doing? What do you not want to be doing?

By carefully thinking this through and defining your “boundaries,” you are setting yourself up to create the life of your dreams. Not one others dream of for you.

Choose Who You Want to Serve

As a writer, you provide a service to other businesses. Regardless of the specific kind of writing you do, you boost their bottom line and help them succeed.

Thus, it is beneficial to your business to serve clients you really care about. Or, at least, an industry you have an interest in.

Obviously, your biggest concern as a freelancer is getting enough work. So, when you hear about niching, it’s only natural to become resistant. How on earth can you hope to make any money if you're limiting your potential number of clients?

The reality is, you'll ultimately make a lot more by niching, because you'll become an expert and a leader in your market. And you'll work with companies you love, because all of your marketing and communications will be targeted towards your “Ideal Client.”

Imagine that: loving every client you work with, and getting paid handsomely to do so. Pretty amazing, right?

So, for your final exercise, write down a vivid description of your “Ideal Client.” Who is it? What do they look like? What is their personal and social life like?

Where do they hang out? What keeps them up at night? What problems, fears, and frustrations … or hopes, dreams, and aspirations do they have? And how can you provide a unique solution for them?

In doing this exercise, you'll not only define the kind of clients you'll be thrilled to serve, you'll have a much easier time marketing yourself.

Why? Because you'll always know who you're talking to and where they're hanging out. And you'll know exactly how to serve them. Which means simpler marketing and bigger, better results.

You're probably thinking, “I have much bigger fish to fry than thinking about my 'why' and my 'goals' as a writer. I need money!” And I don't blame you.

However, time and again, successful entrepreneurs have shown that focus and knowing exactly what you want are the keys to success. Without them, you're just shooting in the dark.

I urge you to take the time to carefully answer these questions and go forward in a clear, focused way. You'll find greater success and get to living your version of the writer's life faster than ever before.
