How to Stay on Track for Freelance
This entire week, I’ve been giving you legendary copywriter Clayton Makepeace’s strategies for becoming the “Total Package.”
Today I want to give you the final piece you’ll need.
And that is, take it one step at a time.
Look, becoming the Total Package for your clients and being able to reach a point where you can earn a heck of a lot more money than you do now, while working LESS, is doable. But it takes time.
There is a lot to learn. And to be sure, it can be overwhelming at times.
Pick one thing to master at a time.
If you’re just starting out with copywriting, then focus your energy on getting good. Learn how to write compelling bullets … irresistible offers … and attention-capturing headlines.
Study past promotions and see what made them work. Write out by hand the ones that were big winners.
Already have some copywriting chops? Start dipping your toe into the marketing pool. Be curious and learn. How is copy used in the marketing process? Where are the areas where copy can make an enormous difference to a company’s bottom line? Observe what marketers are doing. Save the email sequences you get and study them. Try and figure out how to make them better.
Already have a good grasp of marketing? Then move on to mastering specific skill sets so you have more tools in your toolbox. Learn how to write Video Sales Letters that convert.
Learn how to do a product launch via email. Discover all the many different ways you can use an autoresponder email series to boost your client’s revenues.
Do this, and in a very short period of time, you’ll be the “Total Package.”
Now, a word of caution: If you try to learn all of this at once, chances are you’ll end up overwhelmed and not mastering anything at all.
That’s why consistency is key.
Set a schedule for yourself and stick to it. Even if all you have is five minutes a day, use those five minutes to improve your skills and gain more knowledge in some small way.
Remember, this is like mastering a musical instrument. You’ll make great strides devoting small amounts of time consistently, every day (say, 30 minutes) … than you will by practicing in 4-hour blocks every once in a while.
I don’t remember where I heard this maxim, but it’s absolutely true: A little, done a lot, will add up to something great. A lot, done a little, won’t amount to anything.
So, be disciplined to do something every day to move toward improving your skills and knowledge.
And, speaking of discipline – just because you’re being disciplined doesn’t mean you have to put an inordinate amount of pressure on yourself to be 100% perfect at this and “get it all” right away.
As Voltaire said, “The perfect is the enemy of the good.”
You’re bound to make mistakes. It’s part of the learning process. So, let yourself be “not good” at all this while you master it.
Success and becoming the Total Package takes some elbow grease. But, put in the time and effort, and the rewards will be well worth it.
