New Freelance Project a Major Confidence Booster for this Circle of Success Member

Over the years, Circle of Success member Ednette Mixon has taken on as many freelance copywriting and desktop publishing projects as she’s able to with her full-time job. The most recent gig, with a rapidly growing construction company in need of major help revamping their marketing materials, is the biggest yet.

“When I met with the client, I presented my capabilities by making several suggestions that demonstrated not only my knowledge of construction-industry marketing, but also my ability to address their needs and concerns. To my delight, they thought I was a fit for the project,” says Ednette.

“They signed my contract for me to complete a redesign of their marketing templates. This included a proposal cover and firm-profile cover as well as templates for performance resumes, project profiles, organization charts, and proposal internal documents. In addition to the templates, they needed me to produce (layout and type) approximately 18 project profiles (cut sheets) and two dozen resumes, formatting all the content for each document using their new templates. I worked with a designer to create the fresh design in InDesign, and I produced all the other documents.”

Ednette landed the job thanks to three factors in particular. First, she has 14 years' experience in construction marketing. Second, she had been learning and working on freelance work, steadily honing her writing, design, and marketing skills. Third, she had an “in” — a colleague she had worked with years before who was already working for the client and made introductions.

“I witnessed firsthand the power of taking what you know and using it to fill a client's needs. I didn't have to know absolutely everything; but out the gate, it was clear I knew more than the folks sitting around the table. I was able to help and really make a difference. What a confidence booster!!” says Ednette.

It’s a great example of how experience and contacts from your 9-to-5 career days (or even your personal life) combined with your newfound copywriting and other professional skills can be a great way to kick off your freelance business in earnest.

Ednette says, “I am proud to say that the knowledge I've gained from being a Circle of Success member and having access to all of AWAI courses and programs allowed me the confidence and the skills to take on this project. Although a lot of work, the project is complete. I know that I should have charged more for the work, BUT more importantly I learned a lot and had fun working with their marketing team.

“My goal is to continue promoting my skills to other similar companies and to take on work so that I can eventually reach my goal of full-time freelance copywriter and marketing consultant. One step closer to the writer's life!”
