AWAI Member Uses Past Work Experience to Excel in Her Niche
Susie Kuse spent most of her life in sales, selling audio/video, home theaters, and software – she even worked in the spa and wellness industry. She liked it. But when health problems interfered with her ability to perform and she didn’t have the energy for the travel, the long days, and the stress … she needed an alternative. Something she could do from home.
That’s when she discovered copywriting in late 2014. And since then, she’s been steadily honing her copywriting and client-landing skills. Things are coming together. By focusing on her chosen niche ‒ spas, and wellness (you can see her freelance website here: www.spacopy.com) ‒ she’s consistently been able to land new projects. It’s a great example of using previous job experience and personal interests to guide you in a niche you’re an expert in and have a passion for. Susie says she learned this from Joshua Boswell during the Launch Your Writer's Life in a Day event.
“What great advice! It just made everything so much easier. My writing projects are faster and easier because I already have knowledge of the industry, and the companies I have approached love the fact that I ‘speak spa.’ They don't have to teach me the industry, and that makes a big difference for them,” says Susie.
“I’m working with a couple of medical-spa clients to revamp their marketing engines. We're starting by segmenting their databases and then creating an offer grid based on their clientele. Then we will use social-media marketing and email campaigns to attract the right, new clientele and nurture and increase loyalty in their current customer base.
“I've started a money-making website too and have a client that has asked me to ghost-write his autobiography, which we will use as a sales and marketing tool for his business. He has a pretty remarkable story!
“Last weekend I attended the International Esthetics, Cosmetics, and Spa Conference in Fort Lauderdale, FL. I had a goal of coming home with one to three potential clients, and I came home with 10! Five are spa consultants, and the other five are spa manufacturers or distributors of spa equipment. It's so exciting! I am over-the-moon about working with these potential clients.”
Susie’s first taste of AWAI was Barefoot Writer magazine. Then she put the Accelerated Program for Six-Figure Copywriting on her wish list.
“I really wanted to get the Accelerated Program, but it was Christmas, and money was very tight. The great thing is, I have a brother who never knows what to get me, and when he asked what I wanted, I said, ‘how about this writing program, so I can change my career?’ In true brother style, he said, ‘Huh?’ So I showed him the Barefoot Writer, and the info about the Accelerated Program, and he got me the program for Christmas! My brother is so awesome!”
Even though Susie’s health problems have subsided, she’s definitely not ready to go back to her old job.
“I love having my schedule be truly my own,” says Susie. “I've been able to travel for family obligations, which I never could have done as a rep on someone else's calendar. And I've found that while I'm still not a morning person, I love to write in the afternoons and evenings, and I can get in 4-8 hours a day, even though they're unconventional hours.
“So I want the writer's life because it gives me the freedom to take care of my family, to get my work done when I'm most inspired instead of during set hours, and because I can once again make the six-figure income I was used to in sales. Only this is so much more fun!”
