Key Message Copy Platforms: How to Price Them to Maximize Your Income

Casey Demchak

Casey Demchak here … back for Day 5 of The Writer’s Life.

This week I’m revealing how to make Key Message Copy Platforms a copywriter service that can really build momentum in your freelance career.

Over the past four days I’ve detailed what a Key Message Copy Platform is and I’ve outlined how to organize and write them. I’ve also emphasized why January is such a great month to pitch them to your clients.

In addition, I’ve taught you how to recognize ideal situations for pitching your Key Message Copy Platform copywriting service.

Yesterday I revealed five proven closing lines that can seal the deal and help you land a lot of Key Message Copy Platform writing assignments.

Today, I’m rolling out a very simple pricing strategy that enables you to make $200 to $300 per hour or more when you write Key Message Copy Platforms.

If that sounds like the kind of money you’d like to make while writing from anywhere you want — keep reading!

For the last 15 years I’ve written about seven to ten Key Message Copy Platforms per year. However, since making this my core copywriting service during the second half of 2015, the number of Key Message Copy Platforms I am writing has increased dramatically.

On average, each Key Message Copy Platform I write is 12 to 15 pages in length. For years, I charged a flat fee of $3,000 for this service.

However, now that I have a ton of experience writing them, I routinely charge fees of $6,500 or more.

If you’re just starting out, charging a fee of $3,000 to $4,000 is a good way to land assignments and gain experience. But by all means, if you’re able to charge more and go for higher fees right away — do it!

How it breaks down to $200 to $300 per hour or more

On average, it takes me a total of 10 to 15 hours to review background information about a product, interview the client to gain additional information, and then write a Key Message Copy Platform. This includes a first draft through revisions.

At a flat fee of $3,000, 10 to 15 hours of work breaks down to $200 to $300 per hour. Not bad. But when you gain some experience, the numbers are even better.

This month I am writing two Key Message Platforms for clients. For both projects I am being paid $6,500. In this case my 10 to 15 hours of work breaks down to $433 to $650 per hour. Will I be concerned if the project ends up taking 20 hours? No, because $325 per hour is still an excellent rate.

Do I tell my clients how long it takes me to write a Key Message Copy Platform? No I don’t. Why? Because I’m not selling my hours. I’m selling high quality and value — and I deliver high quality and value.

So my clients don’t care how long it takes (as long as I hit my deadline). They just care about the quality and value I provide them — and providing over-the-top value to your clients should always be your first concern.

  1. Casey, thank you for this series - great stuff!

I have already invested in your program and have sold two KMCP's - thanks to your excellent training! :)

Question: What size companies and/or types of markets do you recommend selling this service to?

    Mike Connolly

  2. Hello Casey, I am currently working my way through the Six Figure Copywriting program. I would like to purchase your Key Message Copywriting Platform. Is this program something I can work on along with Six Figures or do you recommend studying each separately?

  3. Thanks for the wealth of information passed on.

  4. Casey- I just purchased your program as it sounds like it would be a unique service to offer companies. I was wondering...roughly how many other copywriters have you heard of through this program that have had success with this? I was also curious as to the average time for most to land their first client for this service? I am new to this (but I have been in B2B sales for the last 25+ years) and am eager to start making some money. These course are adding up! Thank you in advance.

  5. Hi Casey, It was an enjoyable week, with lots of insight and 'aha!' moments.
You said "On average, it takes me a total of 10 to 15 hours ... interview the client to gain additional information...".
A guide, or loose script to the interview would be useful. I've interviewed quite a few professionals in various walks of life, but I can't quite get my head around how to use an interview to get more product info.
Again, thanks for a great week.

  6. Casey - Have you ever used this approach for services, or non-profits and how do they or should they differ?

    John B

  7. Hello Casey -- Great series. Like Ms. Hughes above, I am currently working my way through the Six Figure Copywriting program. Is the KMCP program something I can delve into immediately after completing Six-Figures, or is B2B client experience a pre-requisite? Thank you. Also, will we be seeing you at Bootcamp anytime soon as I think you have a great deal to offer attendees.
