Success Mindset: Why NOT Setting Goals Can Mean More Success

Did you read that right? Am I encouraging you to NOT set goals for your web-writing business?

You did, and I am.

This year, instead of focusing on a "goal" (something in the future you haven't yet attained), make the dialogue with yourself, your team, your family, and your peers about the "accomplishment" you're right now in the process of completing.

Speak in the present tense instead of the future … as if you’ve already achieved your desired end result … and then do the work required to make it happen.

As web writers, we know the power of words and the importance of using the right words.

Using the right words for search engine optimization is important to the successful search ranking of a website …

Using the right words on a call-to-action button is important to successful conversion rates …

Using the right words in an email subject line is important to the successful open rate of an email campaign …

And, using the right words about what you want to achieve this year as a web writer is important to your success.

Changing the language changes the mindset, which changes the results.

Napoleon Hill talks about this in the classic bestseller, Think and Grow Rich. He teaches a 6-step process to acquire the money you desire, and part of the process is to “read your written statement aloud … As you read, see and feel and believe yourself already in possession of the money.”

Of course, there’s more to it than simply reading words — even the right words — aloud and using your imagination.

You still have to do the work. But, having the right mindset is like using the right map to get to your final destination quickly and without driving around in circles.

Instead of Setting Goals, Plan Action-Based Achievements

So, how do you ditch the in-the-future “goal” mindset and replace it with an in-the-now “achievement” mindset?

Treat your current goals as just your first draft. If you haven’t already done so, write them down. Now, take out your red pen and start making edits.

ACTION STEP: Revise goals by turning them into present-tense, Action-Based Achievement Statements.

For example, instead of, “My goal is to acquire one new client each month” …

Turn that into, “I am acquiring one new client this month by doing _____” (fill in the blank with whatever it takes to make this happen).

Instead of, “My goal is to make six figures as a web copywriter” …

Turn that into, “I am making six figures this year by doing _____ right now.

This is a small shift, but it’s an important one. It takes your desired outcome and puts it in the present, where you can take action and make it happen.

We can’t affect the future except by what we do in the present. By thinking of your desired outcome in the present tense, you stay focused on taking consistent action now rather than leaving it for “someday.”

See and Feel Your End Result

Hill says to, “See and feel and believe yourself already in possession of the money,” because emotions drive results.

As web copywriters, we know this. In the copy we write, we evoke emotions to drive response. We can do this within ourselves, too.

ACTION STEP: Write your Big-Picture Accomplishment Statement. Take your desired end result and fully visualize what it will mean and how it will feel to achieve this big picture. Write it down.

For example, “Earning a six-figure income in 2018 means I have paid off debts and invested for retirement, and I feel proud, competent and in control of my finances.”

When you’re emotionally invested in your outcome, you’re more willing to do whatever it takes to make it a reality.

Have a Firm What and Why, But Be Open to the How

If you’re making six figures this year to feel proud, competent, and in control of your finances (your what and your why) … that’s great!

To earn $100,000 a year, you just have to earn $8,333 per month, or $1,923 per week.

How are you going to do that?

Now, the Law of Attraction may tell us we attract what we think about, but there’s a little more to it than that.

You may attract the opportunity, but you still have to be ready and willing to do the work.

ACTION STEP: Follow Hill’s advice and read what I’m calling your Big-Picture Accomplishment Statement aloud every night before you go to bed and in the morning before you start your day. Consider adding a brief meditation practice to visualize and feel your end result.

ACTION STEP: Use your Action-Based Achievement Statements to center and ground yourself as you begin your workday. Take a moment to visualize how your daily action leads to your Big-Picture Accomplishment.

Hill says, “There is a difference between WISHING for a thing and being READY to receive it. No one is ready for a thing until he believes he can acquire it. The state of mind must be BELIEF, not mere hope or wish.”

Taking this a step further, when you have the mindset of belief and accomplishment, you’ll be ready to find the opportunities to do the work to achieve your desired results.

And, with this belief, if the first “how” or course of action doesn’t work, another will present itself, if you’re open to seeing it.

Success Begins and Ends With Your Mindset

Your mind truly is the most powerful tool at your disposal. When you fill it with the proper fuel and put it in the proper gear, you can achieve whatever results you desire.

So, write powerful, present-tense, Action-Based Achievement Statements and a Big-Picture Accomplishment Statement for yourself this year. Plug them into your mind and let them go to work.

Do so, and, in the immortal words of Dr. Seuss … “Oh, the places you’ll go!”
