COS Member Lands Two Copywriting Projects Thanks to Perseverance and Persistence – and Smart Self-Marketing on Social Media

Circle of Success member Lisa Bjornstad recently landed her first two copywriting clients. One is a digital marketer of corporate services and the other is a huge group of mental health providers. (The details are confidential.)

She’s thrilled, of course. But she also took the opportunity to inspire her fellow AWAI members by sharing this message on the Barefoot Writer Facebook Group:

“It works, guys. Just keep going! Keep marketing yourselves. Keep telling people that you are a writer. You will get a lot of ‘no's,’ but that first ‘yes’ will be so worth it!”

It’s a great example of the sense of the community that you find among copywriters … and the can-do spirit. Combine that with some smart self-marketing and Lisa, who’s a semi-retired mental health therapist, was able to secure that first project.

It was on a Facebook writer’s group where one of the members had announced he was looking for a copywriter.

“I responded immediately and asked for more information. In the meantime, the voice in my head that likes to plant soul-crushing doubts told me, ‘You’ll never succeed. Look how many others want it!’ I fought against the negativity and sent the guy a link to my website,” explains Lisa. “A day or so later he sent me a message wanting to set up an interview via Skype, and the rest is history. Incidentally, he loves my work and has more when the first project is done.”

Lisa met the other client on LinkedIn, where she had applied for a job months ago without success … but didn’t give up.

“I asked the poster of the job to keep me in mind for future gigs. Now, here’s a lesson I learned the hard way once before, and resolved to not make the same mistake again,” says Lisa. “I didn’t sit around waiting for him to contact me. I followed up with him, reminding him who I was and asking if they needed another copywriter. They did! I am so glad I followed up. It is so important to success in this business.”

For Lisa, the writer’s life is a long sought-after dream to escape the 9-to-5 and indulge in her love of writing … that’s coming to fruition.

“I would much rather be my own boss. And why copywriting? I love writing; I always have. Writing brings me a lot of joy — taking the words that comprise our language and arranging them in sentences that just sing. I love the cadence of words, and how their sounds are intensified merely by juxtaposition to each other. What a delightful exercise!” says Lisa.

She says The Accelerated Program for Six-Figure Copywriting gave her a solid foundation for her new career. And Circle of Success has also proven invaluable.

“As a COS member, I get to take many AWAI courses free of charge, and the remaining courses with huge discounts,” explains Lisa.

“However, I think that the most valuable benefit is the tight-knit group of incredibly supportive people among the COS members. Meeting so many of them at Bootcamp last year was a joy. I also appreciated the special COS-member-only gatherings at Bootcamp. It’s just such a great, welcoming program — well worth the investment!”
