COS Member Lands His Dream Job with Top Financial Publisher
Wil Reed had long dreamed of being a financial copywriter. And his dream is coming true. After having completed several projects for Dent Research in the past (he wrote a promotion for Harry Dent's newest book, Zero Hour, for which he still receives royalties), he’s been working full-time with top financial publisher Weiss Ratings since last July. He couldn’t be in a better spot to hone his skills.
“I am one of two dedicated copywriters working remotely,” explains Wil, who works from lake house with a view of the Smoky Mountains in eastern Tennessee. “I write mostly emails and other short-form copy. But I'm working on a long-form sales letter (front-end promotion) I expect will go out in the next month or so.”
Wil heard about the job at Weiss Ratings through AWAI, which had sent out an email with job listing and also mentioned it in a video with the company founder. Then Wil set about applying for the position in a way that would stand out from the crowd.
“I wrote a "sales letter" promoting myself and why I would be a good fit,” says Wil. “The letter turned a ‘weakness’ (autism) into what could actually be considered a strength as a copywriter. Martin and Eric were impressed with my letter, and probably also with the fact that I had some experience writing financial copy for Dent Research.”
“I would say getting several AWAI programs free or at a discount (such as Clayton Makepeace's 2015 Financial Intensive in Atlanta, and his 2016 Speed Writing event in Denver) were invaluable,” says Wil, highlighting one of the benefits of the program.
“COS training was also valuable … learning how to write effective headlines, leads and closes … along with using effective proof in my copy. And giving and receiving critiques upped my game as well.”
