This Freelancer Landed His First Client Thanks to Bootcamp
“One way or the other, my goal is to surpass my day job income no later than the end of 2021, making this my early retirement career. I just turned 60 last week, and am so thrilled to finally be getting paid doing what I truly love to do – write!”
It’s clear Todd Geisen has big goals for his copywriting career. And he’s already well on his way to making it happen.
During AWAI’s FastTrack to Copywriting Success Bootcamp earlier in 2019, he made a crucial contact by submitting a spec assignment to a potential client at the Job Fair … and ending up getting a freelance assignment from Hay House, Inc., a company in the health, leadership, spirituality, and self-help niches.
“I had submitted several spec assignments. Hay House wasn’t among them, only because I’d run out of time leading up to it,” explains Todd.
“I’d planned an early arrival to squeeze out every moment of the event to launch my writing career. Enjoying poolside and a leisurely breakfast outdoors at the Marriot prior to sessions starting, I found myself inspired to write the Hay House spec on my laptop and submitted it right away.
“That same evening, when checking emails in my room, I had a response waiting in my inbox. Her words were ‘You really captured what I was looking for.’ Within a week of Bootcamp, we were on video call together to introduce ourselves and get a sense how well we could work together. By the end of the call, I was asked, how busy is your summer? It sounded very promising!
“After reading it, I couldn’t contain myself! Thankfully, my room was on the first floor. So no one could hear me jumping up and down with excitement!”
This initial project was to write three emails promoting an author and speaker’s online teaching series on cancer healing and prevention. The messages were a hit and got good results. Todd hopes to work with Hay House again.
In the meantime, he’s searching out new clients.
“Through networking, I’m in the early stages of working with a few other companies. One friend is president of a company that works with legal firms, banks, and entrepreneurs to help get through the regulatory hurdles of starting a business. We’re working together to develop some client case studies, telling stories of how his firm goes above and beyond the competition,” explains Todd.
“Another friend owns a website developer software company, and is looking to expand his marketing efforts. He holds weekly user livestreams and has an annual online conference in October. His goal is to increase attendees this year to 250, so I expect to be able to help him with that, and other product sales campaigns.”
