Door #1 or Door #2? As Dan Kennedy sees it, there are only two choices for your future. If you select Door #1, you are in control, and over a relatively short time you move from chasing money to having money chase you. You build your future on a solid foundation.
If you go with Door #2, everybody else is in control, you never stop chasing money, your reality stays as it was at the very start, your journey is circular not progressive, and insecurity gnaws at you more with each passing year.
“Listen, this is no April Fool,” says Dan. “And nothing to be fooling around with. We’re talking about the way you want to live your life.
“Everybody thinks they’ve got all kinds of time. A guy walking on the beach a couple of weeks ago got killed by a small airplane falling out of the sky. If you want to be a self-employed freelance copywriter with a high, stable, reliable income … respectful clients providing interesting work and good opportunities … control over who you work with (and choose not to), where you work (follow the sun if you wish, or lease an Aspen cabin for the winter), and when you work … prominence, prestige – patiently waiting won’t get it.”
“So, here’s the thing,” continues Dan. “There is no other pro copywriter earning 7 figures who’s never earned less than 6 figures … who has used copywriting as the key ingredient of a very solid foundation, creating the ideal future I laid out for you – the one represented by Door #1 – as his present … who actually has a reliable methodology for creating a copywriting business – not ideas and opinions, a reliable methodology … who is offering to peel back the curtain and let you see it all. Nobody. This is it. And my Business of Copywriting Academy, May 6-8, is the only time, only place it’s going to happen. I am conducting this Academy one time only, exclusively for AWAI. There is no ‘do it later’ or ‘next time.’
“We have an excellent group coming, and I’m looking forward to working with them. Whether we add any more to the group or not is of little consequence to me. I’ve made a personal commitment to motivate each and every one who attends.
“But to be fair, I asked Katie to let you know that there are only 10 spots still open for the Academy. And every last available discount ends absolutely and forever on Monday, April 12.
So … let me ask you again … Door #1 or Door #2?
Cassandra Lee has already chosen Door #1. “In getting ready for Dan’s Academy, I’m starting to see how important ‘business’ is to achieving the writer’s life that I want. I feel like I’m getting ready to be more of a business person instead of just a designer who does some copywriting,” says Cassandra.
This is from someone who almost didn’t register for Dan’s Academy. On February 28, Cassandra wrote to me, “I prefer believing that being good, getting good results for clients, and working hard should be enough to reach my goals … but I want to get to the same neighborhood as Dan, and if he has a map he’s willing to share, why should I struggle and take longer than necessary?”
One more thing Dan asked me to share with you … a Q & A about writing for the Web vs. print. You can find it here.
Speaking of writing for the Web, check out how much opportunities for Web copy specialists will increase this year …
According to GetResponse’s 2010 Email Marketing Trends study, 53.8% of businesses plan to focus on email personalization this year. The next-biggest focus? 52.4% intend to improve email headlines and subject lines.
Another big trend, according to the survey, is video email marketing. Last year, only 15.7% of responders used video. In 2010, more than 80% plan to do it. And, finally, a whopping 90% plan to integrate social media into their email marketing campaigns.
What does this mean for you? If you have expertise in social media marketing, online video marketing, or Web copywriting, you’re positioned for success. As Christine Butler describes below, it starts with getting the proper training, and then letting people know you’re available.
“I believe it’s working!” Christine Butler wrote to Joshua Boswell last week. “After returning from the Web Copy Intensive, a friend asked me if I was now ready to rewrite her website. (She knew I was going to Las Vegas to learn about Web copywriting.) I said ‘Sure!’ Now I’ve got to put my money where my mouth is. Thanks for the inspiration to ‘just get going and it’ll come to you.’ I believe it’s working!”

The next step in the Become a Web Writer Roadmap Tutorial is now available!
One of the biggest mistakes new copywriters make is not planning their success. They get started on a career-changing (and life-changing) program and are excited to make big money. But, sadly, without a solid game plan that defines how and when they’ll put their new business together, that program usually ends up on the shelf collecting dust.
In his latest Become a Web Writer Roadmap Tutorial, Joshua Boswell helps you make that solid plan by answering some of these questions:
- What kind of physical equipment and space do you need to be successful?
- What are the realistic time and money commitments you should be making?
- What are a few daily routines you can implement to skyrocket your odds of success?
- What do you do about non-supportive friends, family, and loved ones? (CAUTION: This should not be underestimated. Ignoring this kills more businesses than laziness … )
Plus, he shares dozens of his best practices, tips, and ideas that allowed him to rapidly build a strong and profitable six-figure copywriting business.
This is #2 of the powerful 8-part video series Wealthy Web Writer members get so they know what to do the next day, the next week, the next month, and as far out as 6 months down the road.
Five benefits of having your own money-making website. It:
- Gives you a forum for your writing, on a subject you’re passionate about.
- Creates a passive stream of revenue down the road, allowing you to focus on even more writing projects while you have income rolling in.
- Establishes you (over time) as an expert in your niche.
- Brings in a little or a lot of money, depending on how much time you decide you want to invest.
- Adds another title or description to your resumé: Website Publisher!
There are a lot of resources you can use to build your own website. But How to Write Your Own Money-Making Websites takes you by the hand and walks you step-by-step through the process. Nick shares the exact same methods he used to build his own site, www.CoffeeDetective.com, into a $4,000+ per month generator.
(Inside tip: There’s a deal on the program going on this month that’s yet to be announced. But you can get in right now by clicking here.)
Exotic travel, income opportunities, and a happy couple. Juliene Munts just got back from AWAI’s travel photography workshop in Morocco, led by professional photographers Rich Wagner and Efrain Padro.
“Another great AWAI workshop and photo shoot in a place I never dreamed of visiting,” writes Juliene. “I expected to sit in a classroom with a few side trips, but instead, we hit the ground running!
“I’ve been to workshops in Santa Fe and Ecuador, and this time took my husband along. I’m one step closer to being a real travel writer/photographer. I feel ready to polish up the articles, set up the accompanying photographs, and begin submitting for publication.
“We’re feeling more confident, as well as finding a mutual hobby for the rest of our marriage. You can’t beat that!”
Forget April in Paris … May’s the time to go … especially if you want the kind of fun and learning experience Juliene’s talking about!
And … until Monday … Lori’s offering you a $500 flight credit to help you pay for your airfare.
If you’ve never been to Paris – or even if you have – you won’t want to miss this very special opportunity to visit next month. With professional photographer Shelly Perry by your side, you’ll explore (and photograph) Europe’s most beautiful city while also learning how you can sell your images (and how to make a nice side income to supplement your future travels).
“We’ve got a jam-packed schedule on this trip … with walking tours planned up to the top of Montmarte … down the Champs-Elysees … across the Luxembourg Gardens … to famous cafes – Café de Flore and Les Deux Magots … around the Louvre … down the Seine … to the Eiffel Tower by way of Les Invalides … around the Palais Royal … and beyond … ,” says Lori.
“We’ll be based in the Latin Quarter with Notre Dame and the Seine just a stone’s throw away. And we’ve already taken care of all the details. Your hotel accommodation at the stylish Hotel Minerve, right in the Latin Quarter has already been arranged and is included in your conference fee.
“What’s more, this year, we’ve limited the group size to just nine people so each person gets a lot more time with Shelly. It’s going to be a blast … with lots of personal attention and plenty of time for exploring and shooting photos.”

Even Mozart had a swipe file! “I have never made the slightest effort to compose anything original,” Mozart once said. A good reminder to continually build your swipe file. There are ideas and inspiration in every good piece of copy you receive – email sales letters, direct mail, catalogs …
If you want a jumpstart of building your own swipe file, take a look at Copywriting Genius: The Master Collection.
It’s a one-of-a-kind collection of 64 home-run, often record-setting direct response letters and magalogs — each and every one is an industry control … some have mailed four or five years or more! Plus, there are exclusive interviews with the copywriters … AND a full analysis of both the writing and design to give you an insider’s view into why each piece worked so well.
“The insights you’ll get from Copywriting Genius: The Master Collection will make you a much stronger copywriter … and leapfrog you ahead of your peers faster than you ever thought possible. The research tips I learned from master copywriter Peter Betuel will save me 100 hours a year. Understanding what made Clayton Makepeace’s hugely successful magalog for Weiss Publishing work helped me through some trouble I was having with my last project. I don’t care how much experience you have — this resource is must reading for any copywriter who’s serious about his or her career.” – Paul Hollingshead / copywriter, AWAI Co-Founder
The hallmarks of a successful copywriter include, according to legendary adman David Ogilvy:
- Obsessive curiosity about products, people, and advertising.
- A sense of humor.
- A habit of hard work.
- The ability to write interesting prose for printed media, and natural dialogue for television.
- The ability to think visually. (Television commercials, in particular, depend more on pictures than words.)
- The ambition to write better campaigns than anyone has ever written before.
Ogilvy’s observations still hit the mark today – and what he said about writing for television could also be applied to the Internet and online videos. (Check out his famous Rolls Royce ad on page 264 of your Hall of Fame book.)
Bob Bly on Success: “Success to me is doing what I want to do … when I want to do it … with whom I want … and being paid very, very well for it. (My definition of ‘very well’ is roughly 2 or 3 times more than my neighbors make!)”
What’s your definition of success? You tell me yours, I’ll tell you mine. Send me a quick note at email@example.com and I’ll send you a note back with what success means to me.
As Executive Director of AWAI, Katie Yeakle has been helping people live the writer’s life since 1997.
“AWAI is built on a big promise … that we can teach you a new skill that can lead to increased income … independence from the 9-to-5 grind … and the freedom to live and work where you choose.
“All of us at AWAI stand behind that promise. In fact, that’s how we measure our success – by how many people we help reinvent their lives.
“Follow our proven advice, and you can be among the many successes we’re so proud of.”
