Inside AWAI

This market spends $85 billion a year promoting its goods and services … it’s the largest Web writing market in the world … the largest user of email marketing … and it’s been called “the surest road to six figures” …

There’s only one problem: a lack of qualified copywriters!

On Tuesday night’s teleconference, veteran B2B star copywriter and acclaimed author Steve Slaunwhite made one thing very clear. “We need more good B2B copywriters. Come on over!”

Steve explained five big advantages of writing for the B2B (Business-to-Business) market:

    1. Lots of potential. The income opportunity is very real. Steve used to tell copywriters to expect $50K their first year, maybe $75K their second, and six figures in their third year and beyond. Those are conservative estimates that Steve has seen a number of copywriters beat. “Six figures is not a lofty goal. The pay rates and opportunities are such that you should be making that much,” says Steve.
    2. Lots of work. B2B clients churn out a lot of marketing materials – brochures, Web copy, lead-generation emails, e-newsletters, online video scripts, and more – and they need copywriters for all of it.
    3. A shortage of good B2B copywriters. There just isn’t a lot of competition right now. Clients want a B2B specialist. It’s different than writing copy for consumers – different language, different approach, different style. “It’s not difficult to learn,” says Steve, “but you do have to learn it.”
    4. A low-hype style of writing. If hard-driving, emotional, long sales letters aren’t your thing, B2B might be right up your alley. These are often lead generation or product education pieces – emails, Web copy, brochures – and they’re usually shorter than the typical business-to-consumer copy. It’s a learned style that Steve calls “business conversational.”
    5. Loyal clients. Clients often have ongoing needs. And they don’t want to have to look for a new copywriter each time they have a new project. Prove yourself from the start, and you’ll have steady work.
  • Lots of work and a shortage of writers = perfect timing to break into B2B. “And if you’re interested in Web writing, B2B is a paradise!” says Steve.

If the opportunity is so great, why aren’t more copywriters jumping on board? Well, some writers think you need to be a “techie” to write B2B copy. Not at all. You’re writing marketing materials, not technical manuals.

The other reason might be a lack of “glamour.” You won’t see any million-dollar B2B copywriters, but you will see plenty of six-figure freelancers in this market. Companies are used to paying the professionals they work with well … the accountants, lawyers, expert consultants.

Copywriters fall into that same category – professionals who know how to get work done that they don’t know how to do. The pay scale can be very lucrative: $4,000-$7,000 for a white paper, $2,000-$3,000 for a newsletter, $750-$1,500 for a one-page email.

Steve offers a couple of easy tips for establishing yourself as a B2B copywriter:

    • Learn how to write effective B2B copy. Steve’s program, Secrets of Writing High Performance B2B Copy is the authority. The 16 lessons, with audio and workbook exercises included, are designed to give you everything you need to know to be a successful B2B copywriter.
    • Create a website to promote yourself. Two-thirds of all potential clients will check out your website to ensure you’re the real deal before they hire you. So to ensure your website passes the “test,” Steve recommends writing it in a "business conversational" style that demonstrate your skills. TIP: be sure to include the words "business-to-business" or "B2B" displayed loud and clear. B2B clients are looking for a specialist, so make sure your website says you are!

Order Secrets of Writing High Performance B2B Copy by tomorrow at midnight, and save $150.

JUST ADDED: In an exclusive webinar, Steve is going to show you exactly how to write (or re-write) your website to position yourself as a B2B specialist.

  • Okay … I know I’m “spending a lot of ink” on this today. But I feel very strongly about the potential of this opportunity for you. And I’m so impressed with Steve, his program, and all the “extras” he gives our members through his program that I feel like I’d be doing you a disservice NOT to spell everything out.

Here’s a perfect example of how Steve goes “above and beyond” … You don’t have to “go it alone.” You’ll get ongoing help and support from Steve and other successful B2B copywriters through the members-only B2B forum.

Think of it as a private B2B copywriting club …

Steve is very active on the forum … answering your questions … sharing special business-building strategies and tips for getting new clients. Plus, and this is huge … he regularly posts leads for projects he’s unable to take on due to his busy schedule. Steve told me recently that every lead he’s posted on the forum so far has turned into a client for an AWAI copywriter.

Get all that Steve has to offer you … plus save $150 … until midnight tomorrow.

  • How this “knitting grandma” built a website that rivaled an entire team of experts after only 11 days “live” … and how you can, too!

Last week, I reported that Sara Chute’s site,, was coming up in the #3 position on Google for her targeted keyphrase of “knit socks.” She accomplished this after reading through and absorbing only about 10% of Nick Usborne’s How to Write Your Own Money-Making Websites program and less than half of Pam Foster’s Site Audit Made Simple program.

The second half of her story gets even better.

Sara says, “With the confidence I gained from that first success, I decided to put my skills to the test on another site. A friend of mine was having some challenges with his site. A whole team of people had helped build it – SEO specialists, tech people, Web developers – but he wasn’t happy with the results he was getting.

“I decided to put to work some of the things I was learning and see if I could improve on it. I made a little 3-page site and showed it to my friend. After some consideration, he gave me permission to launch in competition with his main site. We wanted to see what would happen, and how quickly (or not).”

  • “The site has been live for only 15 days now, and has already risen to a rank of 23,175 here in Canada, surpassing the original! Worldwide (out of an estimated 250 million websites), ranks just under the million mark, only 56,000 behind his main site.”

“I’m just getting started,” warns Sara. “I wonder what will happen when I actually complete the courses?!”

The beauty of Nick’s and Pam’s programs are their simplicity. “It’s easy,” Sara says. “If you get off track or overwhelmed, just go back to the checklists. It’s great for keeping you focused on what’s important. You can start small and build from there.”

Sara admits to being a skeptical person – she needed to see the process work. The split-test approach is giving her tangible proof. “These programs are straightforward and back to basics. If you follow them one step at a time, they really do work.”

  • “Nick’s program takes what seems so complicated and breaks it down into manageable little pieces,” says Tracey Ahring, agreeing with Sara. “It’s well-written and researched, and makes building your own website completely doable.

“I have a lot more to do, but How to Write Your Own Money-Making Websites gave me the desire to build my own site, the know-how to actually do it, and the practical methods to let me take my dream as far as I want it to go.”

Tracey’s site,, gives you natural methods for reducing stress and becoming more vibrant.

  • Important reminder!
Free attention and traffic for your website.
As a member of Nick’s Money-Making Website program, you’re entitled to have your website reviewed and featured on the AWAI website when it’s up and running.

This showcase area will ensure that you will be found by Google and get free traffic from AWAI.

“Stay tuned for the unveiling … and, in the meantime, keep working on your site!”

  • How do you maximize your productivity? One idea – follow million-dollar alternative health copywriter Carline Anglade-Cole’s lead and get yourself a personal researcher. It’s one of three productivity tips she shared in her e-letter, Copy Star, and one that she didn’t discover until she was five years into her freelance career.

Once she did, it made a world of difference.

    A good researcher will:

    • Save you time. When you have a researcher, you can focus on writing, without getting distracted by each piece of research needed. More time writing = higher copywriting income. Do what you do best – write copy!
    • Give your copy massive credibility. A good researcher will dig up expert testimonials, reputable sources, and other golden nuggets that you can incorporate into your copy. You’ll write stronger, more powerful copy as a result.
    • Help you pinpoint and highlight the best the product has to offer. “Before I accept an assignment,” Carline says, “I ask the client about the research information he has. If it’s not adequate, I highly recommend that the client hire a researcher.” It’s that important.

It’s all about using your time in the best way possible. Need a researcher? If you’re serious about taking your copywriting to the next level, email me at and I’ll try to connect you with a well-qualified researcher in your niche.

  • Fear – Greed – Guilt – Anger – Exclusivity – Salvation – Flattery. These are the emotional hot buttons that make people respond … motivate them to order goods and services, donate money to charities, and send for more information, according to longtime DM pro Denny Hatch

Denny’s written a terrific workbook called The Secrets of Emotional, Hot-Button COPYWRITING. It’s filled with over 50 examples and 120 illustrations of controls from fund raising, financial services, book publishing, B2B, insurance niches, and more. It will give you insights into how the pros weave these emotions through their copy so skillfully.

    Get your copy here.

  • “Exclusivity” is one of the hot buttons Denny highlights in his book.
A masterful example of exclusivity in copy is the classic International Living letter (#5 in your Hall of Fame book), which starts out, “You look out your window, past your gardener …”

AWAI board member Bill Bonner wrote that copy in 1979. It was an unbeatable control for over 25 years … and it launched Agora into the multimillion-dollar publishing powerhouse it is today.

Two of Agora’s websites still use the idea of exclusivity: and They’re worth studying.

  • Many, including Denny, consider Bill Bonner the greatest copywriter in the world today, and he’ll be making his first-ever appearance at AWAI’s 2010 Fast Track to Copywriting Success Bootcamp and Job Fair November 3-6.

In fact, we’re assembling a “dream team” lineup of presenters that will make the Miami Heat look like a bunch of amateurs. Bill Bonner, Michael Masterson, Ted Nicholas, Mark Everett Johnson, Herschell Gordon Lewis, John Forde, Jen Stevens, Will Newman, Bob Bly, and more will be sharing their copywriting secrets.
