    This market spends $85 billion a year promoting its goods and services … it’s the largest Web writing market in the world … the largest user of email marketing … and it’s been called “the surest road to six figures” …

    There’s only one problem: a lack of qualified copywriters!

    On Tuesday night’s teleconference, veteran B2B star copywriter and acclaimed author Steve Slaunwhite made one thing very clear. “We need more good B2B copywriters. Come on over!”

    Steve explained five big advantages of writing for the B2B (Business-to-Business) market:

    1. Lots of potential. The income opportunity is very real. Steve used to tell copywriters to expect $50K their first year, maybe $75K their second, and six figures in their third year and beyond. Those are conservative estimates that Steve has seen a number of copywriters beat. “Six figures is not a lofty goal. The pay rates and opportunities are such that you should be making that much,” says Steve.
    2. Lots of work. B2B clients churn out a lot of marketing materials – brochures, Web copy, lead-generation emails, e-newsletters, online video scripts, and more – and they need copywriters for all of it.
    3. A shortage of good B2B copywriters. There just isn’t a lot of competition right now. Clients want a B2B specialist. It’s different than writing copy for consumers – different language, different approach, different style. “It’s not difficult to learn,” says Steve, “but you do have to learn it.”
    4. A low-hype style of writing. If hard-driving, emotional, long sales letters aren’t your thing, B2B might be right up your alley. These are often lead generation or product education pieces – emails, Web copy, brochures – and they’re usually shorter than the typical business-to-consumer copy. It’s a learned style that Steve calls “business conversational.”
    5. Loyal clients. Clients often have ongoing needs. And they don’t want to have to look for a new copywriter each time they have a new project. Prove yourself from the start, and you’ll have steady work.
  • Lots of work and a shortage of writers = perfect timing to break into B2B. “And if you’re interested in Web writing, B2B is a paradise!” says Steve.

    If the opportunity is so great, why aren’t more copywriters jumping on board? Well, some writers think you need to be a “techie” to write B2B copy. Not at all. You’re writing marketing materials, not technical manuals.

    The other reason might be a lack of “glamour.” You won’t see any million-dollar B2B copywriters, but you will see plenty of six-figure freelancers in this market. Companies are used to paying the professionals they work with well … the accountants, lawyers, expert consultants.

    Copywriters fall into that same category – professionals who know how to get work done that they don’t know how to do. The pay scale can be very lucrative: $4,000-$7,000 for a white paper, $2,000-$3,000 for a newsletter, $750-$1,500 for a one-page email.

    Steve offers a couple of easy tips for establishing yourself as a B2B copywriter:

    • Create a website to promote yourself. Two-thirds of all potential clients will check out your website to ensure you’re the real deal before they hire you. TIP: be sure to include the words "business-to-business" or "B2B" displayed loud and clear. B2B clients are looking for a specialist, so make sure your website says you are!

  • How this “knitting grandma” built a website that rivaled an entire team of experts after only 11 days “live” … and how you can, too!

    Last week, I reported that Sara Chute’s site,, was coming up in the #3 position on Google for her targeted keyphrase of “knit socks.” She accomplished this after reading through and absorbing only about 10% of Nick Usborne’s How to Write Your Own Money-Making Websites program and less than half of Pam Foster’s Site Audit Made Simple program.

  • How do you maximize your productivity? One idea – follow million-dollar alternative health copywriter Carline Anglade-Cole’s lead and get yourself a personal researcher. It’s one of three productivity tips she shared in her e-letter, Copy Star, and one that she didn’t discover until she was five years into her freelance career.

    Once she did, it made a world of difference.

    A good researcher will:

    • Save you time. When you have a researcher, you can focus on writing, without getting distracted by each piece of research needed. More time writing = higher copywriting income. Do what you do best – write copy!
    • Give your copy massive credibility. A good researcher will dig up expert testimonials, reputable sources, and other golden nuggets that you can incorporate into your copy. You’ll write stronger, more powerful copy as a result.
    • Help you pinpoint and highlight the best the product has to offer. “Before I accept an assignment,” Carline says, “I ask the client about the research information he has. If it’s not adequate, I highly recommend that the client hire a researcher.” It’s that important.
