This is going to fill up fast!
“It’s like having a backstage pass to the Accelerated Program … the pages of the program spring to life!” – AWAI Member Steve Roller
Steve’s talking about the Accelerated Program Live Companion Series … and I’m happy to announce that Rebecca and I are going to offer it again, beginning August 12th. We weren’t scheduled to do this again until next year … but we heard you when you said you don’t want to wait that long. So we carved out the time to do it now … to help you get your copywriting career off the ground sooner rather than later.
If you missed out last time, you’re in luck now. We’ll have 12 sessions before Bootcamp … a special get-together at Bootcamp for all of us in the Companion Series who are there … and then we’ll end the year with 3 more bonus sessions … all designed to put you in great shape to kick off 2011 “locked and loaded” for success.
I hope you’ll join us. Not only will it be a lot of fun, but you’ll be amazed at how much you accomplish … how much “easier” copywriting becomes for you.
And, in case you’re wondering … going through the program live like we do will benefit you whether you’ve completed the Accelerated Program for Six-Figure Copywriting already … are halfway through it … or you’re just starting out. There’s just something about hearing the fundamentals explained and discussed in detail in this group setting … and with all the great expert guests we have joining us … that adds a richer layer to your understanding.
So, if you’re looking for a way to “lock in” the core secrets to writing great copy in a way you’ll never forget them, click here.
One more thing … last time we sold out and had to put people on a waiting list … so if you decide you want to do it – please let us know immediately! Spaces are limited and, based on the requests to “do it now” we’ve been getting, I expect they’ll go quickly. The registration cut-off date is Aug. 2 … unless, of course, we fill up before then.
Congratulations to Jennifer Phillips, Lesa Overhoff, Kennard Brown, Suresh Nair, Nurit Mittlefehldt … all AWAI members hired this week as freelance research assistants to help Early to Rise with its long list of editorial and marketing copy.
Jason Holland, Early to Rise Managing Editor, told me the ad we sent to our new pool of AWAI-trained professional researchers pulled in many qualified candidates:
“I’ve picked 5 (a couple of veteran copywriters and marketers, as well as enthusiastic ‘newbies’ with talent) that we can use on a rotating basis. I’m really looking forward to working with them. They’re going to make our lives a lot easier!”
“I hope you’re having a great day, because I certainly am!” wrote Netherlands resident Suresh Nair when he got the news from Jason. “I got an email from Jason Holland late last evening offering me one of the research & report-writing positions at ETR. How cool is that?!
“Thanks for letting me know about this great opportunity and for all the fabulous work everyone at AWAI has done on the Six-Figure Program, the Companion Series, Money-Making Websites and, of course, the Internet Researcher program.”
“I don’t just want to help you get your freelance career off the ground, I want to help you earn more money from the first day you start out.” That’s a quote from Nick Usborne about his newest program, Profitable Freelancing: The Definitive Guide to Earning More Money as a Freelancer from Day One.
Whether you’re looking to be a copywriter, graphic designer, researcher, desktop marketer, or any kind of freelancer, you should definitely check it out. Nick’s advice is based on his own 30 years of experience as a freelancer, as well as the experience of his numerous coaching clients.
And if you’ve ever taken a program written by Nick … well, then you know how well he delivers.
Because we know this program will be life changing for you, we’ve asked him to let us price it low so that everyone can afford it.
And on top of that, you’ll save another $100 if you order by July 29th.
And more congratulations …
William Grumman is the winner of our “Best Summer Job” Writing Challenge. William – your $100 AMEX gift card is in the mail.
William took us back to 1970 and the summer job he had at Rippe’s Farm Market before starting college. Even at that young age, William knew what it took to stand out and make a difference. He learned four valuable lessons that summer that have stayed with him to this day. You can read William’s essay here, including the story about how Paul Newman helped him sell tomatoes. You can read William’s essay here.
And special recognition to these AWAI members for sending in their essays:

“This was a “not-to-miss” event! I walked away with new insights – business-wise and definitely personal-wise,” writes Kellie Craft after spending one full Saturday with Joshua Boswell last month at his Six Months to Six Figures workshop.
Another AWAI member who was there (though we can’t tell you his name … because his “current” boss doesn’t yet know she’s going to be his “former” boss!) told Joshua “I just closed a $12,000 deal (plus royalties!) using the techniques you taught us Saturday in Dallas. (Results in less than 72 hours!)”

The Wealthy Web Writer’s Copywriting Glossary is searchable, comprehensive, and packed with the most up-to-date, all-inclusive list of words and phrases related to direct mail, Web writing, marketing, and copywriting in general.
And best of all – IT’S FREE!
13 million views on YouTube so far … 1,000% increase in Twitter followers … 600,000 “Like-its” on Facebook. Media cost: nothing.
If you missed it, Old Spice pumped serious life into its somewhat neglected brand last week with a brilliant social media and online marketing blitz.
They incorporated Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube, along with a crew of copywriters (writing fast and furiously in real time) and a few celebrities to create a viral campaign that spread like wildfire.
This campaign used four ideas that any copywriter can put into action. (Big name celebrities not required!)
- Give your copy personality. Either written or on video, a unique and compelling voice will draw people in so they’ll listen to your message. Old Spice Man accomplished this – and with some practice, you can create your own one-of-a-kind voice, too.
- Speak to one person. Paul Hollingshead talks about visualizing your prospect, picking one specific person, and writing the way you would talk to that person if you were sitting next to him (the “barstool test”). Even though Old Spice Man eventually spoke to millions, each of his responses was really a personal exchange with one viewer.
- Tell stories. Stories sell, plain and simple – in print, online, and especially on video. Old Spice discovered that the more stories and the more consistent the delivery, the more frequently people checked them out. Stories also makes it more likely that people will share the link with friends, feeding the virus.
- Keep your online videos simple and short. You might be thinking, “Online video? But I’m a copywriter …” Well, the demand for copywriters who can write strong, persuasive online video scripts is becoming huge. And online video doesn’t have to be elaborate. Even Old Spice, with lots of corporate money from parent Procter and Gamble, kept production simple. Old Spice Man never left the bathroom, never looked anywhere but at the camera, and never changed his posture.
Online video marketing is opening up tons of opportunities for copywriters in the know. Sure, big companies like Old Spice (Procter and Gamble) either have their own in-house writers or hire big agencies. But most small businesses don’t, and look to freelancers for help. Research firm eMarketer estimates that by 2011 advertisers will spend $2.3 billion on online video marketing efforts. That’s four times what they spent just last year!
Marketing With Video Online for Profit will give you everything you need to break into this lucrative niche. Author Jessica Kizorek is an award-winning CNN-featured videographer and leading expert on online video marketing. We featured her story back in the May 27 Inside AWAI, right after she was hand-picked by marketing guru and bestselling author Seth Godin for a private, week-long mentoring session with him in New York City.
You can hear the full story from Jessica herself at the 2010 FastTrack to Copywriting Success Bootcamp & Job Fair. She’ll be joining industry legends Ted Nicholas and Bill Bonner as first-time Bootcamp presenters, along with an All-Star lineup of returning speakers.
Reminder – you can still lock in low monthly payments until the end of the August. Call Member Services at 866-879-2924 now to make your arrangements. Or click here.
Mark Everett Johnson is another of the All-Stars coming to Bootcamp this year. His take on The Writer’s Life …
“I love being able to make a living doing something that offers boundless opportunities for creativity, unlimited potential to make an impact, and that others respect so much.”
Mark was the copy chief at Rodale before going freelance in 1992. Since then, he’s never made less than six figures a year, and this year is turning down business in spite of the recession and charging his highest fees ever. “The demand for copywriters far exceeds the supply, and it certainly feels good to be in demand,” he says.
And, here’s some advice from Mark:
“Go see your clients. I suppose that those copywriters who have the Midas touch can get away with working on a desert island or in a remote hideaway, but I found that I got more respect, more opportunities, and more money when I made the effort to go see my clients and prospects. Two legendary copywriters I knew were Eugene Schwartz and Henry Cowen. Both were New Yorkers, both well enough off to retire, both with the Midas touch – and both made a huge impression when they traveled out to bucolic Emmaus, Pennsylvania to see us. They were probably also the highest paid writers I ever worked with.”
Where else but at Bootcamp can you rub shoulders with the likes of Mark, Michael Masterson, Paul Hollingshead, Don Mahoney, Bob Bly, Don Hauptman, Herschell Gordon Lewis, John Forde, Lori Haller, Jen Stevens … and more? Plus, the 40+ marketers coming to Job Fair … all of us here at AWAI … and a great group of your fellow AWAI members! You really don’t want to miss it. Save your spot today.
ATTN Grant Writers:
Billions more available for grants. Writers needed to help organizations tap into it.
The New York Times reported last Friday that Paul Allen, co-founder of Microsoft, is following the lead of fellow billionaires Warren Buffett and former partner Bill Gates in promising to give away most of his fortune in his lifetime.
“We will look for new opportunities to make a difference in the lives of future generations,” said Allen. He’s already given away about $1 billion, including more than 3,000 grants totaling $400 million through the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation.
More proof that money is available through grants for worthy organizations. What’s needed are more qualified grant writers who can write clear, concise, persuasive grant proposals.
That’s what Toni Rockis has been doing for over 30 years, securing millions of dollars for her clients … and a very nice income for herself. Two reasons Toni recommends grant writing to copywriters: (1) It’s a chance to use your persuasion skills without writing long letters. (2) It offers an extremely rewarding way to make a good living. Grant Writing Success: Opening the Door to Financial Opportunity gives you all the details.

New AWAI Writing Challenge: Tell me about your writing routine.
One of the benefits of The Writer’s Life is the flexibility. It allows you to do what you want, when you want. No more rigid, daily “9-to-5” schedule or boss telling you when you can take a break or vacation.
At the same time, however, a lot of successful copywriters have found a connection between a well-established routine and productivity. William Faulkner once said, “I only write when I am inspired. Fortunately, I am inspired at 9 o’clock every morning.” James Joyce couldn’t start writing until he’d smoked a half-pack of cigarettes in the morning (not necessarily recommended.)
Tell me about your daily writing routine, and what makes it work for you. Include anything that makes it unique or quirky or inspiring.
Get all the details here.
Rebecca and I are heading to the mountains of North Carolina next week to meet with Gary and Merri Scott. We’re making the trip so we can spend a full day talking about ways to further help AWAI members taking their program, Self-Publishing: Your Complete Business Plan to a Life Without Borders. Self-publishing is a goal for many copywriters, and if you’re one of them, we want to make sure you have everything you need to succeed.
It’s always nice to spend time with Gary and Merri … and there’s nothing I like better than improving our programs, but I’m also excited about this trip for another reason …
I’ve heard so much about their idyllic property over the years, I can’t wait to see it for myself. I’m hoping we have our meeting right here!
Two things: Any questions you’d like us to ask the Scotts? Send me a note at firstname.lastname@example.org. And if you already own their terrific program, I have great news. It’s one our Living Programs … meaning any and all “bells and whistles” we add as a result of this meeting will be available to you.
Before I say good-bye for this week … one more note about the new Accelerated Program Live Companion Series.
If you’re stuck … if you’re having trouble “getting through” the Accelerated Program on your own … if you’ve started and stopped it more than once … if you have any questions at all about what your learning or the business of copywriting – I strongly encourage you to join Rebecca and me for our 12 one-hour weekly sessions.
Our promise to you: you will help you breakthrough an barriers holding you back. You’ll be motivated in a way that’s fun and rewarding. Your questions will be answered. You’ll be part of a group working and learning together. And, yes … you’ll get the “push” you need to get to the next level. That’s what happened to these AWAI members who were part of the first group:
“I want to thank you for a fantastic job. You really helped me get through the Accelerated Program. You managed to bring the course to life through your thoughtful presentation and wonderful guest speakers. Thank you again for a job well done.” – Chris Donahue
Linda Steinmuller didn’t mince her words: “This is what I really needed to finish the program! I am now excited to go out and get that first client!”
David MacDonald summed up a lot of the comments we got: “Thank you for a tremendous experience! You have given me the push I needed to finish the basic program and the momentum to launch my copywriting career.”
And this note from Cynthia Sjostedt really gets to the heart of it:
“The Live Companion Series has given me so much more than the skill of copywriting. [It’s given me] confidence, focus, and drive as well. Thank you … thank you!”
Over the years, many AWAI members have come to me – half joking – and said: “Love the program. But is there any way you or Paul or Rebecca could sit down with me while I work on it … in case I have questions?”
Now, I’m happy to say … yes, there is! The Accelerated Program Live Companion Series does just that – and for a very limited time, you can get in at a special 40% off discount. Details here.
And, finally, here’s some advice from a Pulitzer Prize winner: “Write every day. Not to send to publishers, but to throw in wastebaskets.”
Ted Giesel won two Academy Awards, two Emmy awards, a Peabody Award, and the prestigious Pulitzer Prize. But it didn’t come easy.
While contributing articles to Life and Vanity Fair, he wrote and illustrated a book that was rejected 27 times before being published by Vanguard Press. He went on to write and illustrate a total of 44 books, selling over 200 million copies in 15 languages all over the world.
Ted Giesel, of course, is better known by his pen name – Dr. Seuss.
Here at AWAI, we often give copywriters the same advice: Write every day (even if it’s to throw in the wastebasket). In fact, that’s what you’ll hear Rebecca and I say at the end of every session during the Live Companion Series!
Whether it’s copying Hall of Fame letters by hand, writing a blog, creating Web content for your own personal site, or crafting copy for a client’s project, your commitment will pay off.
If I were Ted Giesel, I might add: And will you succeed? Yes! You will, indeed! (98 and 3/4% guaranteed.)”
