  • 13 million views on YouTube so far … 1,000% increase in Twitter followers … 600,000 “Like-its” on Facebook. Media cost: nothing.

    If you missed it, Old Spice pumped serious life into its somewhat neglected brand last week with a brilliant social media and online marketing blitz.

    They incorporated Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube, along with a crew of copywriters (writing fast and furiously in real time) and a few celebrities to create a viral campaign that spread like wildfire.

    This campaign used four ideas that any copywriter can put into action. (Big name celebrities not required!)

    1. Give your copy personality. Either written or on video, a unique and compelling voice will draw people in so they’ll listen to your message. Old Spice Man accomplished this – and with some practice, you can create your own one-of-a-kind voice, too.
    2. Speak to one person. Paul Hollingshead talks about visualizing your prospect, picking one specific person, and writing the way you would talk to that person if you were sitting next to him (the “barstool test”). Even though Old Spice Man eventually spoke to millions, each of his responses was really a personal exchange with one viewer.
    3. Tell stories. Stories sell, plain and simple – in print, online, and especially on video. Old Spice discovered that the more stories and the more consistent the delivery, the more frequently people checked them out. Stories also makes it more likely that people will share the link with friends, feeding the virus.
    4. Keep your online videos simple and short. You might be thinking, “Online video? But I’m a copywriter …” Well, the demand for copywriters who can write strong, persuasive online video scripts is becoming huge. And online video doesn’t have to be elaborate. Even Old Spice, with lots of corporate money from parent Procter and Gamble, kept production simple. Old Spice Man never left the bathroom, never looked anywhere but at the camera, and never changed his posture.

    Online video marketing is opening up tons of opportunities for copywriters in the know. Sure, big companies like Old Spice (Procter and Gamble) either have their own in-house writers or hire big agencies. But most small businesses don’t, and look to freelancers for help. Research firm eMarketer estimates that by 2011 advertisers will spend $2.3 billion on online video marketing efforts. That’s four times what they spent just last year!

  • Mark Everett Johnson is another of the All-Stars coming to Bootcamp this year. His take on The Writer’s Life …

    “I love being able to make a living doing something that offers boundless opportunities for creativity, unlimited potential to make an impact, and that others respect so much.”

    Mark was the copy chief at Rodale before going freelance in 1992. Since then, he’s never made less than six figures a year, and this year is turning down business in spite of the recession and charging his highest fees ever. “The demand for copywriters far exceeds the supply, and it certainly feels good to be in demand,” he says.

    And, here’s some advice from Mark:

    “Go see your clients. I suppose that those copywriters who have the Midas touch can get away with working on a desert island or in a remote hideaway, but I found that I got more respect, more opportunities, and more money when I made the effort to go see my clients and prospects. Two legendary copywriters I knew were Eugene Schwartz and Henry Cowen. Both were New Yorkers, both well enough off to retire, both with the Midas touch – and both made a huge impression when they traveled out to bucolic Emmaus, Pennsylvania to see us. They were probably also the highest paid writers I ever worked with.”

  • ATTN Grant Writers:

    Billions more available for grants. Writers needed to help organizations tap into it.

    The New York Times reported last Friday that Paul Allen, co-founder of Microsoft, is following the lead of fellow billionaires Warren Buffett and former partner Bill Gates in promising to give away most of his fortune in his lifetime.

    “We will look for new opportunities to make a difference in the lives of future generations,” said Allen. He’s already given away about $1 billion, including more than 3,000 grants totaling $400 million through the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation.

    More proof that money is available through grants for worthy organizations. What’s needed are more qualified grant writers who can write clear, concise, persuasive grant proposals.

  • New AWAI Writing Challenge: Tell me about your writing routine.

    One of the benefits of The Writer’s Life is the flexibility. It allows you to do what you want, when you want. No more rigid, daily “9-to-5” schedule or boss telling you when you can take a break or vacation.

    At the same time, however, a lot of successful copywriters have found a connection between a well-established routine and productivity. William Faulkner once said, “I only write when I am inspired. Fortunately, I am inspired at 9 o’clock every morning.” James Joyce couldn’t start writing until he’d smoked a half-pack of cigarettes in the morning (not necessarily recommended.)

  • Rebecca and I are heading to the mountains of North Carolina next week to meet with Gary and Merri Scott.   • And, finally, here’s some advice from a Pulitzer Prize winner: “Write every day. Not to send to publishers, but to throw in wastebaskets.”

    Ted Giesel won two Academy Awards, two Emmy awards, a Peabody Award, and the prestigious Pulitzer Prize. But it didn’t come easy.

    While contributing articles to Life and Vanity Fair, he wrote and illustrated a book that was rejected 27 times before being published by Vanguard Press. He went on to write and illustrate a total of 44 books, selling over 200 million copies in 15 languages all over the world.

    Ted Giesel, of course, is better known by his pen name – Dr. Seuss.

    Here at AWAI, we often give copywriters the same advice: Write every day (even if it’s to throw in the wastebasket). In fact, that’s what you’ll hear Rebecca and I say at the end of every session during the Live Companion Series!
