$114 round-trip airfare to Florida! The airlines are doing their part to be sure you don’t miss this year’s FastTrack to Copywriting Success Bootcamp and Job Fair. Check this out …
AWAI member (and past Bootcamp attendee) Sue Wright forwarded this blast to us from SmarterTravel.com:
“Visit the Sunshine State this fall with American Airlines’ latest sale. Fly from more than 150 cities across the U.S. to Ft. Lauderdale, Key West, Miami, and Orlando, among other sunny destinations.
Flights start at $114 round-trip with American. AirTran, Continental, Delta, United, and US Airways are offering comparable (though unannounced) prices on many of the sale routes, too.
Travel is available September through mid-November. NOTE: This sale ends August 13 … tomorrow!
So, before tomorrow, grab a great deal on your airfare … Here’s the link for SmarterTravel.com.
“I’m slammed – in a great way!! AWAI members need to know how good this life can be … You can live your dream life for sure!” That’s how Graphic Design Master Lori Haller started our conversation on Monday. She went on to say …
“I am so booked, Katie … I have 5 art folks doing freelance production and art, 2 Web people helping me, 2 illustrators, a few copy editors, 1 photographer, and a photo researcher, too.”
Lori’s going to be at Bootcamp, sharing some essential graphic design tips for copywriters. She wouldn’t miss it … because of what can … and very often DOES … happen there.
One contact = 6 projects … and counting. Lori told me about something that happened to her at Bootcamp three years back. She struck up a conversation with one of the attendees … (If you don’t know Lori yet, she’s very outgoing and loves to meet as many of our members as she can while she’s there.) This new friend of Lori’s gave her name to a writer who called her with an idea for a cookbook.
“So I designed/produced cookbook #1. Then, we did an online version for Createspace. Now … I’m working on the details for:
- an app for iPhone and iPod Touch
- a Spanish version
- cookbook #2, including a Web version
- cover photo illustration art direction
- brochures, e-blasts, and landing pages for it
“Here’s the thing,” says Lori. “Software and technology are changing every second. NO ONE can keep up – not even me. (Plus, secretly, I am a real tech nerd. Do not tell anyone!)
“But … if you just learn and use the basic skills outlined in our AWAI Graphic Design and Copywriting programs … roll them into these brand-new technologies … and stay in touch with new ideas by attending great events like Bootcamp, you’ll keep on track and gain access to new projects and clients.”
If you’re undecided about coming to Bootcamp this year … please spend one hour with us next Tuesday. I promise you … this ONE HOUR COULD CHANGE YOUR LIFE FOREVER.
That’s because, during this hour, you’ll have the opportunity to hear about Bootcamp from four AWAI members who credit coming to Bootcamp as the “game changer” in their copywriting careers … even though they weren’t sure they were “ready.”
Listen in as Joshua Boswell, Mindy Tyson-McCord, Roy Furr, and Cindy Cyr give you their perspectives on why this is such a “must-attend” event. You’ll hear exactly how Bootcamp turned them into full-time, in-demand pros. Plus, you’ll hear a few funny stories about some of the “behind the scenes” happenings at Bootcamp.
The call is free. And with these four in charge, it will be “lively” (to say the least).
Sign up here. If you can’t make the live call at noon (ET), we’ll be replaying it at 8 and 10PM (ET). I hear there will be a few “surprises” on the call, too!
Lori uses a photo researcher? That caught my attention … I asked her more about it … especially since we’ve just “re-opened” our brand-new Secrets of Becoming an Internet Research Specialist program this week.
“I use researchers to help me find the photos I need – and it’s priceless!” said Lori.
“My problem: I need the EXACT SHOT. I can see it in my head – the shape, the content, the color. I just cannot afford the time to search for it – a search that may take hours. But having that ‘perfect’ photo could mean winning the control or NOT!
“My solution: I get folks to help me out by doing photo research for me. I show them a PDF file of my design and point them to the 5 or 6 stock photo agencies where I have an account. I give them as many details about what I want as I can and a deadline. They do their thing … I move forward with the rest of the design project. It’s a total win/win.”
IMPORTANT REMINDER: As I said, we just “re-opened” the doors for this program on Monday. And, if you remember, the last time we did that, we had to close them in just two weeks.
We’re watching the numbers closely – and if I have to, I won’t hesitate to “pull” the program again. I want to ensure that those who take advantage of this unique opportunity (that only we offer) get the full benefit of it and have the very best chance to succeed. The last thing we want to do is fill the market too fast and take away from everyone who’s already jumped in.
So … if this something that interests you, please don’t hesitate. Order today, right here. You can go through the program over the weekend and be ready to get the full benefit of the webinars (see below!) starting next week.

Congratulations Rachel Karl … the latest AWAI member to be inducted into our Wall of Fame! Rebecca told you a little bit about Rachel last week. Here’s more …
A former teacher, Rachel joined AWAI just last year. Her first gig? Writing an annual report for a private school.
These days, she’s as busy as she wants to be, writing website copy, email autoresponders, enewsletters, blog posts, and other online copywriting projects.
I asked Rachel, who’s on track to break six figures this year, how her life has changed since becoming a copywriter …
You can read her answer (and more) here.
And if you’re at Bootcamp this year, you can help us celebrate with Rachel … and all the other new Wall of Fame members … during our very fun opening night reception.
Are you ready for AWAI’s Wall of Fame? Submit your application here.
Rebecca and I are heading to the big DMA conference in San Francisco October 11-13 … with the sole purpose of spreading the word about YOU!
We want every marketer there to know that AWAI copywriters, graphic designers, and researchers are the best trained … and make it easy for them to get in touch with you.
That’s why we’re pulling out all the stops …
We’ll have a booth at the exhibit hall.
We’re doing a direct-mail campaign to all attendees before we even get there.
And we’re working hard to set up meetings with the large direct-response marketing companies that will be there, to personally invite them to this year’s Job Fair at Bootcamp.
Do you plan to attend the DMA conference … or live in the Bay Area? We’d love to meet up with you!! How about Tuesday evening, Oct 12? (Location to be announced.) Nothing formal … just a casual get-together over a drink to say “hello.” If you can join us, send me a note at email@example.com.
We may even be able to use your help at the conference! As I said, AWAI will have a booth in the DMA’s exhibition hall this year … and we’re going to need help “manning” it.
If you’re interested in helping us out, send me a note at firstname.lastname@example.org with a few paragraphs about why you’re the best person for this important job. Either Rebecca or I will then call you for a brief interview. If you’re selected to represent AWAI, you’ll get free admission to the conference (a $2,000 value), which means direct access to the thousands of marketers who will be in attendance.
Job Opportunities …
Over 30 jobs were added to Direct Response Jobs this week, including 2 for Internet researchers and 4 for graphic designers. Also … right now, marketers are looking for Web writers, SEO specialists, bloggers, a catalog copywriter, a resume specialist, and more.
Click here for details on all these opportunities.
Three more money-making websites up and running …
“I feel like I had floundered finding a topic for my site until I took the 7-week webinar training with Nick Usborne,” writes Carolynne Woods. “I have the written course for reference when needed, but I’m able to devote my time to writing good content now that I have the focus, thanks to the webinars.”
Carolynne’s site, http://www.cat-health-detective.com, specializes in cat health, advice on cat care, and making good choices on behalf of your cat to help prevent illness.
“I’ve been able to work on a project with my husband that we both find interesting,” says Kathy Erwin. “This website helps to promote my husband’s preparedness consulting business and gives us something fun to work on together!”
>Kathy’s site, www.suburban-self-reliance.com, gives survival and preparedness techniques to ensure that families are ready to handle any emergency or disaster.
“Nick Usborne’s guide has been a valuable asset in learning how to write my very own money-making website,” says Elizabeth Chavous. “I would not have known where to begin without his insight and guidance.”
Elizabeth’s site, www.looseleafteaspy.com, is aimed at people who want to learn about loose leaf tea, including how to brew the different types along with information about its health benefits.
Good news! Nick is doing another 7-week training series in September. This is the third time he’s done this type of training – a plus for you.
That's because in addition to his brand-new live training webinars, you'll get immediate access to the membership site that was started in December. This means you'll be able to join an active community of people who are ALREADY seeing the results of the work they did just a few months ago.
You can be a part of all this if you order Money-Making Websites by Fri., Aug. 20th. Plus, you’ll save $100.
Facebook tips from the kitchen pros. Madison, WI-based Sub-Zero Inc. and its companion company, Wolf Appliance, are leaders in premium home refrigerators and professional appliances for the serious home cook. They’re also proving themselves leaders in Facebook marketing, with 103,182 current friends, over 30,000 of them customers. (They have 10 times more fans than their leading competitors combined.)
Not bad, considering they launched their Facebook page in September 2009. Online marketing newsletter eM+C spoke recently with Christopher Parr, Sub-Zero and Wolf’s brand communications and interactive marketing manager. Parr had three simple tips for establishing a brand presence on Facebook that any size company can use.
As a copywriter, take advantage of Parr’s tips for your own Facbook business page. And if you’re offering social media advice to your clients (always a good idea), these are good lessons to pass along:
- Be likeable. Don’t be the friend who overstays his welcome. Don’t do more than two posts per day, and really spread them out.
- Invite participation. Post questions, ask your friends to upload photos, and nurture a dialogue with them.
- Talk like a friend. Talk with your Facebook friends the way you would with real friends. Turn off the PR-speak and press releases. (As a copywriter, you already know how to do this. Think of the “barstool test.”)
You’re ready to put your Web-writing skills to good use and start a freelance career … But where do you find clients? Getting clients is the #1 fear most writers face when they become freelancers. And very few resources tell you where to find the really great clients, how to approach them, and the steps you need to take in order to land them.
Joshua Boswell will put that fear to rest during his exclusive Wealthy Web Writer webinar, Where to Find Clients and How to Land Them, on Wednesday, August 18, at 3PM (ET). He’ll show you the best way to approach potential clients, how to get them to hire you whether you’re a working or inexperience Web writer, what to charge if it’s your first paid writing assignment – and much more!
As with all Wealthy Web Writer events, this $79 webinar is FREE for Platinum Members. Get all the details about this event here.
Do you have your free copy of The Wealthy Web Writer’s Copywriting Glossary yet?
Ricahard Robinson does. He says it’s “superb.”
Alice Zyetz tells us, “Great job. I had asked for a definitive way to spell particular new words like email, website, etc. This document sets the standard for that as well. Thank you for your hard work.”
And Michael Veglia writes, “Thanks for a great job in producing this glossary. It will be immensely helpful in my work.”
The Wealthy Web Writer’s Copywriting Glossary is searchable, comprehensive, and packed with the most up-to-date, all-inclusive list of words and phrases related to direct mail, Web writing, marketing, and copywriting in general.
Writing Challenge Reminder: “My Daily Writing Routine”
One winner will be selected from all entries received. If it’s you, you’ll receive a $100 American Express gift card and have your essay published on the AWAI website.
Deadline: Sunday, August 22, 2010
Members helping members …
Have some helpful advice you’d like to share with your fellow AWAI members? Send me a note at email@example.com and I’ll get the word out.
From Nancy Lamb
“I never did figure out how to view online courses via the Firefox browser. I’ve had to use Safari – that is, until today. I just loaded Google Chrome (it’s free). The programs are all viewable, readable, resizable, and scrollable. FASTER than Safari.
“It’s like night and day.
“So if you’ve had problems viewing the programs online, download Google Chrome for a great online experience. I’m tickled. This will make it so much easier to read the materials online with no glitches.”
From Steve Roller
“If you’re afraid of public speaking (or just don’t like it), you’re not alone. Warren Buffett was petrified of public speaking until he took a Dale Carnegie course. These days, he tells all his followers that it’s crucial to get trained in public speaking. Michael Masterson has a good story about taking the Carnegie course as well.
“A less expensive (about $7/month in most areas) and ongoing source of public speaking training is Toastmasters International. There are over 12,500 clubs in 113 countries. (See www.toastmasters.org to find one in your area.)
“My involvement in Toastmasters led to a new client this week. Another member of our club is a social media consultant, and heard me speak a few times about copywriting. Based on that, she asked me to rewrite her entire website, without ever seeing my writing or asking for references.”
Here are 4 reasons why Steve thinks you should consider Toastmasters:
- You’ll meet professionals who may eventually become clients or refer you to others. Toastmasters is not a networking group, but it lends itself to opportunities.
- You’ll become better at public speaking. Even if you never give speeches, you’ll be more confident giving your “elevator speech” and speaking to prospective clients.
- You might discover you actually enjoy public speaking! If you do, you could parlay it into speaking gigs, resulting in big exposure, credibility, and new clients.
- Since you’re already a copywriter, you’ll have a much easier time writing speeches (especially persuasive ones!) than most people.
Any finally for today … here’s some advice from new Wall of Fame member Rachel Karl
“F-O-C-U-S: Follow One Course Until Successful.
“The downside of not having a boss breathing down your neck is it’s easy to get distracted by shiny objects as a freelancer.
“And there are so many cool things you can specialize in as a copywriter. So what I did was I took on anything that came my way at first. This gave me a feel for all the different types of projects available.
“Then I narrowed it down to the few I enjoyed the most and studied as much as I could about those (and still study up on them). Then I created a plan that included how I would market those services. And finally, I went after clients and landed some projects that fell under my chosen specialties.”
Thanks Nancy, Steve, and Rachel. And thank you for stepping Inside AWAI with me today. Until next week … Keep Writing!!
