  • Newsmax wants to hire more AWAI-trained copywriters too! On Monday, I told you that Gary Chappell, President and CEO of Nightingale-Conant, was coming to Job Fair to find more AWAI-trained writers. Well, yesterday I heard from Travis Davis, Associate Publisher of Newsmax, that he’s coming back too. And he’s looking for financial and health copywriters …

  • The $600 billion challenge that could change the face of philanthropy … and explode opportunities for grant writers. What do Ted Turner, David Rockefeller, and Michael Bloomberg have in common (besides the fact that they’re all incredibly wealthy)?

    They were three of 14 attendees at a clandestine dinner in New York City in May 2009. The event, fully described for the first time in the July 5, 2010 issue of Fortune magazine, was the kick-off to a charitable pledge the world has never seen.

    - When the community side starts gaining momentum … get in touch with the media and tell them about it! It's a fun topic and the media love dogs. ; )

     “This weekend, my cable went out. I jumped on the phone, figuring to get the issue resolved in plenty of time to watch a lacrosse tournament that my son had anxiously waited for all week. I ended up sitting on hold for 40 minutes, listening to some awful music while waiting for a customer service rep to answer the phone and read from a script, only to put me back on hold. I kept giving myself pep talks to stay on the line so that I wouldn’t lose my ‘place.’ (While on hold, I could have gotten 2 loads of laundry done, walked the dogs, AND washed the car!)

  • Two more resources you might want to try … from AWAI member Lane Sennett. “I have a full-time job as a Business Systems Manager right now, and commute two hours a day. I’ve found the iPhone app called Dragon Dictation to be amazing! As I think about a subject I want to write about, I just start the app and talk into the phone. Is voice recognition system puts my words on the screen, and then I email it to myself. I can then take 15 minutes to review it, edit it in Word, and it is ready to post to the Web, cut and paste into a website, add to a requirements document or white paper I’m writing, etc. Its voice recognition is very accurate.

     “Another idea: During the session Live Companion Series session yesterday, you talked about keeping notebooks for various topics, ideas, and thoughts. Have you used Microsoft One Note? Many people have this software program as part of MS Office, but have never tried it. It works perfectly as an alternative to paper notebooks, and interacts with the Internet to save Web pages. Particularly helpful when doing research! I keep looking for a phone app that will do the same thing, but have not found one yet.”

And, finally …

  • “An idea can turn to dust or magic, depending on the talent that rubs against it.”

    William Bernbach went from a mailroom job during the Great Depression to staff writer for the 1939 New York World’s Fair to copywriter for an ad agency. He then parlayed his copywriting experience into developing one of the great agencies of all time, Doyle Dane Bernbach.

    If you watch the AMC TV show “Mad Men,” about fictional ad agency Sterling Cooper in the early 1960s, you’ve heard many references to Bernbach as one of Sterling Cooper’s competitors.

    And you might remember Bernbach’s “Mikey” ads for Life cereal or his “We try harder” ads for Avis. Another one of his classic ads, for Polaroid, featured a close-up of Louis Armstrong. The six lines of copy were so strong, Bernbach didn’t even use a headline.

    Bernbach is also credited with being the first to combine copywriters and art directors into two-person teams instead of keeping them in separate departments – a model that still flourishes in advertising agencies today.
