Important advice from Entrepreneur.com … Help finding your path to living “The Writer’s Life” … Step into Dan Kennedy’s “cave” … ATTN: AWAI members – these companies want to work with you … How a 15-second computer ad can make you a better writer … A fun and easy 7-day writing challenge for you
“Yes, I’m a talented professional. You need to hire me.” And what’s the easiest, most economical, most effective way to get that critical message out? With your own “21st century business card” … a professional freelance website.
Entrepreneur.com advises: “You must have a professional-looking website if you want to be taken seriously. If your site looks like it was designed by a barrel of colorblind monkeys, your chance at making a good first impression will be lost.”
Well, Rebecca’s making it very easy for you to create a website for yourself that you’ll be proud of … one that will do all the “heavy lifting” for you when it comes to finding clients.
It’s a sweet deal … In just 1 hour a night for 4 evenings, Rebecca and her team of experts will show you how to build your professional freelancer’s website … from start to finish. Nothing will be left out. No question will go unanswered.
Within a week — you’ll have your own website up, live, and running. A website you’ll be extremely proud to show to everyone. A website designed to drive the kind of clients you’re looking for directly to you.
And, for the record: No “tech speak” allowed! Rebecca’s given her word. If you’re comfortable with email, Word, and the basic, everyday computer programs, you have all the technical “know-how” you need.
Just think … in less than a week, you’ll see your very own website come to life … and for a fraction of what it would cost you to hire someone else to do it. Talk about a sense of accomplishment!
Don’t put this off. You need a website.
TOMORROW AT MIDNIGHT IS YOUR DEADLINE to register for the “Freelance Website in Four Days” Express Webinar Series. Sign up here.

Congratulations to Lane Sennet, who will be “open for business” in October. Here’s the path Lane’s taken … “The best part about my introduction to AWAI was that the various offers and classes have lined up so I can quickly accomplish my goal of becoming a full-time B2B copywriter!
“First, I signed up for the basic Accelerated Copywriting program. Then I attended a free B2B webinar and decided to add that to my curriculum, as it fits with my interest areas.
“Next, Katie and Rebecca’s Companion Series was starting, so I signed up for that in order to keep myself on track and accountable. And now, finally, I’ll be taking the
‘Freelance Website in Four Days’ Express Webinar Series … so I’ll be fully trained and ready for business by October!”
I’d love to hear what your path has been so far. And if, for any reason, you’re off the path at the moment, I’d like to hear about that too. I can help you get moving again. Send me a note at AskKatie@awaionline.com.
And, speaking of paths … here’s one path that many AWAI members are finding great success following. It could be right for you too …
Autoresponders and email copywriting … a.k.a. the “short letter” route to six figures. Yesterday, Rebecca told you about the massive number of job ads Angela, our DirectResponseJobs.com researcher, is finding:
“Copywriter for sales page and email sequence …”
“Copywriter for squeeze page, email sequence, and report …”
“Writing series of 7 emails for a seminar …”
“Sales page – 3 upsell pages – 5 emails – and 5 autoresponder emails …”
“Email marketer who can move people with words …”
These ads are all from entrepreneurs and big-named businesses like Sears and Expedia who are desperately seeking qualified copywriters to write compelling, persuasive autoresponder and email copy.
The kind of copy that’s short … conversational … and fun to write. Just ask John …
John Reisinger has chosen to specialize in writing autoresponders … and as of this week, he can call AWAI a client! “If you’ve been thinking about one of AWAI’s programs, don’t wait 7 years like I did to go for it. When I saw Jay White’s Autoresponder Program, I KNEW short-form copywriting was my calling because his method taps my creative writing side big time. And Jay’s feedback from my specs was invaluable too. Katie bought my whole series this morning!
“Jay showed me nuances to make my letters more fun and easy to read. Thank you, AWAI, for making programs like Jay’s available, as well as for the paying spec assignments.”
John’s not the only one on his way to a great career writing autoresponders and email copy. Jay told me recently: “I’m constantly amazed at the level of talent your AWAI-trained writers show. The spec assignments I’m seeing from my Autoresponder Apprentice program are simply phenomenal, and it’s so gratifying to know that the program is helping to launch new careers.
“ As you know, my goal with Autoresponder Apprentice was to see hundreds of copywriters achieve the same success that I’ve had, making serious money using a simple, step-by-step method for writing effective, response-driven, follow-up emails. And it’s actually happening right before my very eyes. I can’t wait to see what’s next!”
Become one of Jay’s Autoresponder Apprentices today. Let him show you how to write these short, conversational, fun letters. And until Sept. 24th, you can save $100 plus attend two bonus webinars for FREE!
During the bonus webinars, Jay’s actually going to GIVE you an action plan for landing clients in a newly discovered market for autoresponder copywriters. And, then he’s going to critique your copy for you so you know your writing will impress potential clients. You won’t want to miss out on this opportunity.
And, great news if you already own Autoresponder Apprentice. It’s one of AWAI’s “Living Products,” so you get all of these new bonuses and updates free!
A question for you from copywriting and marketing legend Dan Kennedy: “If you were invited into my ‘cave,’ to peer over my shoulder, to see how I pull my raw material, research, and thoughts together …
… to see the actual copywriting work I do, in every stage – first drafts, final work …
… to quiz me and get in-depth analysis of the ‘why’ behind the copy – the psychology, the choice of stories, the structure of the headlines, a thorough anatomical dissection of the work, in some cases line by line, item by item …
… if you were privy to results, both good and bad …
… if you were ‘inside,’ seeing copywriting that earns me a million-dollar income and produces over $50 million in an average year for my clients – would that sharpen your copywriting power?”
Dan’s extending a very special invitation to you today. Read more from him here.

“We’re always looking for talented writers, preferably in the natural health and alternative medicine field. We’re also very much interested in finding a few solid researchers who are really good at conducting online health research. AWAI Job Fair is a great place to go to find these great people.” – Maria Dolgova, Associate Publisher, Natural Health Dossier
“We’re excited to be able to attend AWAI’s Job Fair, because AWAI-trained copywriters are dedicated and well trained – and these are the types of individuals we love to hire.
“So copywriters who are hardworking, motivated, and interested in writing financial copy should certainly come visit our booth at the Job Fair.” – Jason Hanson, Stansberry and Associates Investment Research
C. Roger Young from the Pastoral Counseling Center is just starting to hire freelancers. He says, “We have a school for future counselors and are looking to create better follow-up and customer retention. So we would probably invite a small number [of your writers] to try [our spec assignment] and then hire one or two. … I took the AWAI copywriting course myself a few years ago. It has gotten us this far!”
And, says Jason Holland from Early to Rise, “We love working with AWAI-trained copywriters. Several of our products have become bestsellers thanks to working with AWAI alumni. And we’re always looking for new copywriters with fresh ideas … who are schooled in the fundamental techniques of winning copy. We’re looking forward to meeting you at the Job Fair, where we’ll be handing out spec assignments to test your abilities. See you there.”

“I feel really blessed to have this career in this economy. If it wasn’t for AWAI and all the connections I’ve made, I don’t know how I would be paying for my son’s college tuition. As it is, we didn’t have to borrow a dime!
“I just decided this morning to come to Bootcamp again. I realized that even though my schedule is full right now, I still need to spend time networking – and no matter how much training I’ve had over the past five years, I always learn something new at Bootcamp. Looking forward to seeing everyone in November.”

Will Newman on Features and Benefits
How a 15-second computer ad can make you a better writer. If you’ve been with AWAI for more than a couple of weeks, you know to “focus on benefits and not features.”
Quick review: Features are the things a product comes with: size, frequency of publication, speed, color. That sort of thing.
Benefits are the things a product will do for you: make you more beautiful, stronger, richer, more popular, let you have more fun.
Straightforward enough … But, like all lessons, it gains meaning and impact when we apply it to something we’re familiar with. So let’s take a quick look at copy from a computer company’s website.
- X4 635 quad-core processor [2.9GHz, 2MB L2, up to 4000MHz bus]
- 6GB DDR3-1333MHz SDRAM [3 DIMMs] from 4GB
- 750GB 7200 rpm SATA 3Gb/s hard drive from 500GB
- 512MB ATI Radeon HD 5450 [DVI, HDMI, VGA adapter]
What do we have?
A list of features wrapped up in a jumble of numbers and letters.
If you’re like most of us non-techies, these numbers and letters don’t mean a thing. At best, we’re confused. At worst, we feel like idiots.
Definitely not where you want your prospect to be.
One computer company got it right a while ago. They’re all about benefits. On their website, plain as day, they proclaim, “Why you’ll love a Mac.” The reasons have nothing to do with DIMMS, SDRAM, quad-core, or anything like that.
The reasons “ … you’ll love a Mac: A Mac is easy to use, powerful, compatible, and highly secure.”
These simple words tell a far more compelling story than the numbers and letters.
Now don’t get me wrong. I’m not trying to sell you a Mac. I am trying to sell you on the idea that simple words tell a far more compelling story than numbers and letters. When you read them, you have a much better sense of the benefits you’ll get.
Now let’s see the “focus on benefits and not on features” rule in action.
When you get a chance, do an Internet search for “I’m a Mac.” You’ll bring up YouTube videos of ads Apple ran for a couple of years. In the ads, a button-down businessman says he’s a PC – and a cool, hip young man proclaims he’s a Mac. Click on one of the videos to see what I’m talking about.
These ads sold the idea of ease of use, stability, and coolness – the main benefits people look for in a computer. All in 15 seconds. Never once did those ads mention features like processor speed. But they sold computers like crazy.
A good example is the one showing the two men, each in his own box. The PC describes all the things he’ll have to do before he can start doing anything with his computer. After 10 seconds of banter, the Mac says, “It sounds like you have a lot to do before you do any stuff. So I’m just going to get started, because I’m kind of excited!”
I am a firm believer that a lot of good marketing energy is wasted trying to be clever or funny. But these ads don’t waste the effort. Viewers saw them, chuckled, and told themselves, “Next time, I’ll get a Mac.”
There’s a lot more to using benefits effectively than simply describing them. You have to make them real to the prospect’s life — like Apple’s ads did. I’ll talk a bit more about this in coming lessons. And I’ll give you a simple strategy for digging deep into your product’s benefits so your prospect knows that you are really talking about him and his life.
CHALLENGE YOURSELF: Once a day for the next week, find copy that is heavy of features, but light on benefits. Look on websites, in catalogs, in your mailbox. Then, turn those features into benefits! You’ll be amazed at how easy it is do. And, fun too.
