    We all have them – those little rewards that help get us through a busy day or a crazy week.

    It could be as simple as a pint of Häagen-Dazs amaretto almond crunch before bed. Or poring through the National Enquirer with your feet up for 15 minutes before the kids get home from school.

    If you've been really good, perhaps cutting out on a Wednesday afternoon to play the back nine at your favorite course. Or sneaking outside to enjoy a good cigar. Maybe hitting the local spa for a fancy pedicure.

    So how do you unwind? What do you do to relax (that others don't necessarily know about)? Has it become a routine, something that you look forward to and keeps you going?

  • What Shakespeare can teach you about successful copywriting … by Master Copywriter Will Newman

    Bear with me for a moment and read the following excerpt from Shakespeare's King Lear …

    "Yet better thus, and known to be contemn'd, / Than still contemn'd and flatter'd. To be worst, /
    The lowest and most dejected thing of fortune, /
    Stands still in esperance, lives not in fear … "

    Tough, wasn't it? (If you even stuck with it through the end.) But it's typical of the way Shakespeare wrote.

    So why was his hard-to-understand writing so popular in his day?

    Quite simple, really. Shakespeare wrote like the people talked back then. Yes, he used words in new and exciting ways, but he used the common language to accomplish his miracles of drama and diction.

    He wrote like people talked. His audiences understood him.

    This is not only one of the secrets of his success, it is a core secret of your success as a copywriter.

    You hear it a lot, I know. "Write conversationally. Write like you talk." It's much easier to say than to do. Pick up a pen and piece of paper and write to your Aunt Jenny. No problem. Sit down in front of a keyboard and try to write a promo, and what happens?

    Your writing suddenly becomes stiff and stilted. It lacks the ease and flow of conversation.

    If it's so easy to write to Aunt Jenny, why can't it be that easy to write conversationally to your prospect?

    Therein lies the secret – what I do when I can't find the right conversational voice for my copy. I stop writing to my prospect … and I write to "Aunt Jenny."

    I imitate exactly what I'd do if I were writing an informal letter to a friend. I use a pen and paper. I start by asking my friend real questions about her real life. I write until "the flow" starts – the easygoing, natural tone I need. I don't force it. I don't look for it. I let it sneak up on me. When I feel it, I slowly shift gears. Instead of asking about her trip to Aruba, I start talking about how important it is to help street kids. Or about a new supplement that's helped my joint pain that I think she'd like.

    Once I shift gears, I don't immediately run to the computer. I keep writing in longhand until I know I've got the tone and voice nailed.

    Does this strategy always work? Of course not. But it works more often than not. And it saves a huge amount of time and effort.
