The timing couldn't be better for this opportunity …

  • Research firm WebVisible reports that small businesses (like the ones in your local area) spent 159% more on Internet advertising in the second quarter of 2010, compared to the same quarter last year.

"This is great news for our members," Rebecca told me. "It's just further proof that they'll easily be able to find new clients by writing web copy for local clients."

"Most copywriters don't think to do this," she said. "But it's a HUGE source of potential income. Local mom 'n' pops are getting wise to the Internet and the opportunity it offers them to grow."

  • And that's where you come in …

While these businesses are spending more money on online advertising, it's their copy that will ultimately make or break their success.

Even if you're just starting out, you could easily boost their results, since more than likely they've written copy themselves or had a "tech" guy do it for them.

In a sense, you can be their "knight in shining armor."

Best of all, there's usually ZERO competition for these clients.

And since they're so close by, you can become their "go to" expert on everything online marketing related. Talk about "low-hanging fruit"!

"This truly is one of the most overlooked opportunities to boost your income in the coming weeks and months," says Rebecca. "That's why, if you haven't done so already, I highly suggest you get up to speed on online copywriting."

  • Congratulations to our latest $100 Writing Challenge Winner, Rick Jones!

  • Two more AWAI Members land their first clients!
"The dream, she is comin' true!" writes Cyndee Davis.
Cyndee just landed her first gig with a major player in the self-help industry. And it all started with some inspiration from AWAI's Catherine Cairns-O'Keefe.

Cyndee sent her dream client a promo letter, a case study promoting one of their products, and two Autorepsonders doing the same.

"After I sent it, I REAALLLYY tried to stay busy and not think about it … but, of course, I watched the tracking so I knew when they received it. Within a couple hours after it was delivered, the president himself sent me an email saying I had gotten his attention and he wanted to talk!! He said it was great writing.

"Today, he called and we talked through the particulars. He really loved what I sent him … and is sending me a list of their bestselling programs so I can choose which ones I'd like to write promotions for. How about that?

"AWAI has trained me to write. I'm learning more every day. And a major publisher likes my work! I am so excited."

Success is in the air, because that same day new grant writer Marsha Miles wrote in to tell me:

  • "I'm doing the funding strategy, the program re-design, the actual grant writing, and I might be able to get a website out of the deal as well!"

"I got the referral from a business acquaintance before I even hung out my shingle! It feels like I'm on my way!"

"It was AWAI's Grant Writing Success program and speaking with Toni Rockis that gave me the last piece of the puzzle. I'd been struggling to define a niche and was getting nowhere that felt right for me. Until I found Grant Writing, that is!"

  • Members helping members …
"Putting my 'defining moment' on paper and reading it out loud motivated me even further to jump through the hurdles and collapse the walls to make my dream happen!" writes Pam Rodriguez about participating in September's Writing Challenge.

Pam has gone so far as to print out her essay and post it by her desk as a constant reminder of her goals. Great idea!

These Writing Challenges give you a way to exercise your writing chops, maybe help you push forward in your writing career (like it did this month for Pam), or possibly earn you a $100 AMEX gift card … like it did for Rick Jones.

So are you ready for October's Writing Challenge? Here it is …

So how do you unwind? What do you do to relax (that others don't necessarily know about)? Has it become a routine, something that you look forward to and keeps you going?

Send your 1,000-word (or less) essay to me with "My Guilty Pleasure" in the subject line to

  • What Shakespeare can teach you about successful copywriting … by Master Copywriter Will Newman

Bear with me for a moment and read the following excerpt from Shakespeare's King Lear …

"Yet better thus, and known to be contemn'd, / Than still contemn'd and flatter'd. To be worst, /
The lowest and most dejected thing of fortune, /
Stands still in esperance, lives not in fear … "

Tough, wasn't it? (If you even stuck with it through the end.) But it's typical of the way Shakespeare wrote.

So why was his hard-to-understand writing so popular in his day?

Quite simple, really. Shakespeare wrote like the people talked back then. Yes, he used words in new and exciting ways, but he used the common language to accomplish his miracles of drama and diction.

He wrote like people talked. His audiences understood him.

This is not only one of the secrets of his success, it is a core secret of your success as a copywriter.

You hear it a lot, I know. "Write conversationally. Write like you talk." It's much easier to say than to do. Pick up a pen and piece of paper and write to your Aunt Jenny. No problem. Sit down in front of a keyboard and try to write a promo, and what happens?

Your writing suddenly becomes stiff and stilted. It lacks the ease and flow of conversation.

If it's so easy to write to Aunt Jenny, why can't it be that easy to write conversationally to your prospect?

Therein lies the secret – what I do when I can't find the right conversational voice for my copy. I stop writing to my prospect … and I write to "Aunt Jenny."

I imitate exactly what I'd do if I were writing an informal letter to a friend. I use a pen and paper. I start by asking my friend real questions about her real life. I write until "the flow" starts – the easygoing, natural tone I need. I don't force it. I don't look for it. I let it sneak up on me. When I feel it, I slowly shift gears. Instead of asking about her trip to Aruba, I start talking about how important it is to help street kids. Or about a new supplement that's helped my joint pain that I think she'd like.

Once I shift gears, I don't immediately run to the computer. I keep writing in longhand until I know I've got the tone and voice nailed.

Does this strategy always work? Of course not. But it works more often than not. And it saves a huge amount of time and effort.

Try it … and let me know how it works for you.

  • And if you already own Web 2.0, you, too, are in luck. It's one of our Living Products, so all the updates we ever make to it – like the 16 new videos we just added – are yours at no additional charge.

    Deb Monfette approves!

  • "Wow, 16 videos added!" writes Deb. "I've never paid for a program that automatically upgraded the information at no cost. Nick's Web 2.0 is a great program even without the new videos. He offers a terrific amount of information for pennies. Just amazing. You guys ROCK!"

  • And finally for today …

"We must have courage to bet on our ideas, on the calculated risk, and to act. Everyday living requires courage if life is to be effective and bring happiness." – Maxwell Maltz, M.D., author of Psycho-Cybernetics

So tell me … what act are you going to take this week to get closer to living "the writer's life"? Send me a note at I'll be rooting for you!
