Jen Stevens's Proofing Made Easy Tip
It's almost impossible to proofread your own writing.
The reason it's so hard: You know how it's supposed to read – so as you read it, your brain fills in missing words. It makes sense of nonsensical phrases. And it makes producing good, clean copy almost impossible.
The ideal solution is to hire a reliable person to proof your writing for you. But that means paying for it. And we learned about an almost foolproof way to proof your own writing from Jen Stevens at this year's Bootcamp.
It's incredibly simple. You read your copy in reverse – sentence by sentence, from the last sentence to the first. That slows you down – and forces your brain to pay attention to what's on the page and not what you think is on the page.
This is your final editing/proofing step.
First, you need to read your copy from beginning to end to make sure it makes sense. That's when you add and/or delete chunks of copy … move copy around … polish your wording.
Then you take that "finished" copy – writing you feel is as strong and persuasive as possible – and put Jen's system to work.
