This year, for the first time, advertisers will have spent more on Internet ads than on print newspaper ads, according to new estimates from eMarketer.
The digital-marketing research firm says U.S. spending on online ads will hit $25.8 billion, surpassing the $22.8 billion spent on print ads in newspapers.

AWAI member Caroline Maryan is on a roll. Ever since she came to the Ultimate Travel Writer’s Workshop in Santa Monica last August, she’s been having a blast getting her photos and articles published … and landing new assignments, too.

“All you need today is a laptop, patience, and willingness.” Sounds like a quote about The Writer’s Life, but it’s actually 25-year-old entrepreneur Shama Kabani discussing the alternate career path a lot of young people are choosing. She’s the founder of Marketing Zen, a digital marketing firm in Dallas with yearly revenues in the seven figures.
Scott Gerber followed that route. After graduating from New York University with a film degree, Scott’s first business attempt failed. But his second one, a promotional video company called Sizzle It, was profitable the first year.
The experience led him to start the Young Entrepreneur Council (YEC) to serve as a help desk and mentoring hotline.
The December 12 New York Times profiled Shama and Scott, along with other young graduates who are opting out of the normal routine of graduating from college, interviewing with big firms, and landing a job with corporate ladder-climbing potential.
The advice the YEC offers can serve as a lesson to anyone starting their own business, including freelance writers:
- It won’t happen overnight. Eric Bahn, age 29, founded his business, BeatTheGMAT.com, as a blog in 2005. It was three years before he quit his day job to work on the site full-time, and the business now generates close to $1 million in revenues. Be patient.
- Keep your expenses to a minimum. Scott Gerber points out that with today’s Internet tools, any business owner can put up a website, host conference calls or webinars, even have a prestigious Madison Avenue Address without spending big bucks. Shama Kabani even has virtual employees – in the Philippines – none of whom she’s ever met.
- Lack of experience can be an asset. Windsor Hanger, age 22, founder of HerCampus.com, says being young helps attract advertisers like New Balance and Juicy Couture. “They like that I am my readership. I was in college six months ago,” she says. Her site recently started turning a profit. In other words, go with what you know! (Something AWAI advocates for finding a copywriting niche or writing a money-making website.)
- Seek out knowledge. Gerber never took a business or economics class, but took a lot of people out to lunch to learn the nuts and bolts of the business world. “I emailed people in my circle and figured out who knew what I needed to know,” he says. As a copywriter, one of the best ways to accelerate your career is to find a mentor. And finally …
- “You have to really want to do it,” says Maia Josebachvili, 27, a YEC member and founder of Urban Escapes, specializing in outdoor adventure trips. She gave up her job as a derivatives trader on Wall Street to start her company, which grew to 45 employees and was recently acquired by LivingSocial, a consumer site.
These young entrepreneurs are proof that where there’s initiative, drive, and a creative spirit, big things are happening. Follow their lead, and 2011 could be your breakout year, too.
And here are some tips from Master Copywriter Will Newman about what not to do in 2011 …
Don’t forget these resolutions for your copywriting success.
As we move into the new year, I’m sure you’ve made resolutions about building your success. Most of them should be positive resolutions with specific dates. Ones that take the form of “I will finish the Accelerated Program by March 31.”
But sometimes success can be about what you don’t do. This is particularly true when it comes to the hundreds of distractions you face every day – distractions that severely stall your drive toward success if you don’t get a handle on them quickly.
So in addition to your positive resolutions, add the following:
I resolve not to answer the phone when I’m at work.
When you work at home, people feel they can call you about every imaginable subject, none of them work-related. But you are at work. Lose the automatic “I have to answer it” response. Use Caller ID or an answering machine to screen calls. If the call isn’t about work (or a REAL emergency), let your machine answer it.
I resolve not to text when I’m at work.
Texting is more dangerous to success than phone calls. It’s quick, easy, and doesn’t seem like it takes up much time. HOOEY! Texting interrupts your work. You lose focus and time. Those little interruptions translate into backward steps instead of forward progress.
I resolve to train my family to leave me alone when I’m at work.
Establish your own work-at-home schedule. And stick to it! Train your family that, when you’re at work, they need to pretend you are a hundred miles away – not down the hall.
I resolve to ignore housework, building projects, and “honey do” lists when I’m at work.
This is a matter of your attitude. You are at WORK. If you were in an office, you wouldn’t be able to clean the bathroom or work on the car. So you CANNOT do it if you are in your home office.
I resolve to do avoid non-work email, Web surfing, and online activities when I’m at work.
As a copywriter, you’ll spend a lot of time online. Keep it strictly work-related during work time. Follow Michael Masterson’s example and do email only once a day, preferably late in the afternoon. If you run across an interesting website while doing research that’s not about work? That’s what the bookmark button is for.
Are these resolutions easy to follow? At first, no. But once you train yourself, your friends, and your family (it will take about one week, at most), they’ll become second nature.
