I was where you are now, once upon a time — not so long ago…

Let Me Tell You My Story…

I wasn’t always a copywriter. I had no idea what a copywriter was.

I stumbled into it…

It was 1987.

My firefighter husband and I had 2 daughters under the age of 3. Money was tight. Back then, my favorite joke was “We are so broke — we can’t even PAY attention!”

But we always promised each other that WE would raise our kids. Not babysitters or daycare centers. That was very important to us. We were going to have these kids and we were going to raise them ourselves.

So I needed to find a flexible job that would let me be home when my husband was on shift work.

One day, I saw an ad for a customer service job in the local newspaper. It was for a young, thriving marketing company named Phillips Publishing.

Job didn’t pay much. About $8 an hour. But the ad said “flexible schedule” — and that’s just what I needed!

That was probably one of the smartest moves I ever made. I got my education in the business of direct mail from this company with on-the-job experience!

In just a few years — and 2 more kids later — the company launched a health division — and I talked my way into working in the marketing department. (Now that’s a funny story — I’ll share with you during the seminar!) I moved up to the position of Marketing Manager and eventually Marketing Director.

At that time, I started noticing something very interesting…

There were these people called “copywriters” — who worked all over the world. And the company regularly paid them LOTS of money on something called “royalties.”

One copywriter in particular kept writing one blockbuster control after another. I’m telling you — I had NEVER seen so many zeros in front of the decimal in a single check!

Who was this top copywriter?

None other than the late copywriting legend, Clayton Makepeace.

Well, it didn’t take long for me to realize I was on the WRONG side of the equation!

Man, I needed to get into this copywriting gig!

So while working with Clayton to proof his copy — I decided I had to learn HOW he wrote his copy. He was so gracious. He talked with me. Shared some awesome advice — and even agreed to review some stuff I wrote.

Honestly, I just imitated his style. I would take a paragraph from his copy and make changes to adapt it to what I was writing. I would take the tone or anger in his copy and put that same attitude in my copy. And it was working. I was writing controls for my company — but not getting paid any royalties because I was an employee!

(By the way — even though Clayton is no longer with us — I did have the amazing opportunity to have him speak when this event was originally recorded. And boy, am I glad for that! Why?

Because YOU can still learn from this copywriting legend and discover his winning strategies and — and he shared LOTS of great advice to help your career SOAR!)

Any hoo — I finally mustered up the guts to take the plunge — and JUMP into freelance copywriting.

So I KNOW How Scary It Can Be When You’re Just Starting Out…

When I made the leap, I was terrified.

After all, I was saying “ADIOS” to a STEADY job with benefits like a 401K plan, paid vacation time, and sick leave. But we still had a mortgage, 4 kids, and bills! Fortunately, I had a very supportive husband who knew I could do this LONG before I believed it myself!

I mean, I thought I was adventurous and free-spirited — until the thought of losing the stability of my regular, pretty great, tax-deducted, paycheck made me feel woozy! Prayer really came in handy at this time.

And I’m also thankful for the help I got from Clayton! He showed me the ropes and taught me what it takes to write kick-butt copy. In fact, the biggest improvement I saw in my writing skills — happened when I spent one-on-one time with Clayton.

In my first year of copywriting — I learned the power of targeted bullets when a company called Frank Cawood & Associates hired me to write nothing but bullets for them!

When those bullets were on point — the response rate on the sales letter SOARED! I never forgot that lesson. In fact — I make it a point to spend a few days in the copywriting process to do nothing but play around with my bullets! And when I do…

… my bullets turn into subheads… leads… and sometimes even HEADLINES!

It’s so much fun doing it this loco way — and boy does it work! Bullets also keep your copy moving — and that’s so important for the tempo of your copy. We’ll talk more about this tempo thing — and I’ll even share my experience on how I wrote an entire direct-mail package by listening to the beat and tempo of ONE very popular song! Part 1: Breaking Down the Sales Letter: CREDIBILITY AND TESTIMONIALS

Most readers are skimmers (yours truly included!). Your reader is looking for something to catch his eye. That’s the BEAUTY of sidebars! You can actually NAIL the SALE when a reader only reads ONE sidebar in your entire copy! Yep — it’s true! I’ll show you EXACTLY what I mean — and how to rev up the power of your sidebars to boost your chances of creating a winner! And we’ve got LOTS of ways to do this!

And don’t forget your premiums — these are the bonus gifts your reader gets for purchasing your product. It’s a powerful tool in the health marketplace. But many copywriters just gloss over these premiums because they’re “free.” But you will NEVER do that — at least not on my watch!

I’m going to show you how to make your reader salivate and want those premiums even more than they want the product! Yeppers — premiums are a great strategy to show your prospect what a great deal he’s getting — and we’re going to MAXIMIZE this strategy a la Carline-style!

This is the area where A LOT of copywriters PUNK OUT! They don’t close the deal. They deliver limp copy that allows the reader to walk away from the sale! I hate that!

All that hard work — and you don’t close the deal? Oh no — that’s NOT gonna happen to your copy! You’re going to keep the momentum going right to where the prospect shells out the dough!

And you’re going to do it in such an irresistible way that your prospect will THANK YOU for taking his money! It’s a beautiful win-win strategy I use in all my winning controls! Now, you can tap into this skill and make the cash register go Ka-Ching!

Part 2: Breaking Down the Sales Letter: P.S./ORDER FORM/BACK COVER

Okay — I was trying to hold off until your training starts to give you the second most important part of your sales copy. It’s second only to your headline. Dang! I can’t wait any longer. So…

… even if you DON’T become my Copy Cub (and at this point you’d have to be CRAZIER than me to pass up on this opportunity!) — I’ll go ahead and give you the answer now:

The second most important part of your sales letter is the P.S.! Surprised?

Most folks are! And most copywriters sleepwalk through their P.S. copy — if they even bother to use a P.S. at all!

No — I don’t mean to make them both look alike — but I WILL explain exactly how I make my back covers just as powerful as my front covers! Again — don’t make the mistake of thinking your prospect reads the front cover first. Here’s what I mean…

… next time you get your mail — take a look at how the mail carrier “wraps” up your mail. Usually the mail carrier will take a magalog promotion and snuggle the rest of the mail inside the promo and then put a rubber band around everything. So when you get your magalog in the mail — what do you see FIRST? If you say the BACK cover — then BINGO! Now — you’re catching on to why the back cover is so important! Got it? If not, you will after our time together!

Part 1: Designing Your Masterpiece!

Woo-hoo! By now — we’ve dissected an entire sales piece! You really can write a magalog — and you’re not scared of doing it! But hold on, there’s more…

… You’ve written the copy — now it’s got to get designed! How do you do that? The answer is: YOU don’t! You’ll have to work with a designer to turn your words into a masterpiece!

The truth is: a designer can make or break your copy! So you’ve got to create a mutually respectful relationship with your designers. I’ve got a handful of designers I absolutely LOVE to work with. They GET me. They know my craziness — and we LOVE working together!

One of these designers is — without a doubt — an industry LEADER! Yet he seldom — if EVER — speaks at live events. He hates talking to a crowd.
