4 Powerful Lessons Learned from My New Money-Making Website — All About Mushrooms

Person writing on laptop computer

I published the first few pages of my CoffeeDetective website back in early 2006.

That’s over 15 years ago. Crazy!

It was my first “Money-Making Website.” An expression of my passion for all things coffee.

From the beginning, my plan was to keep writing more pages, and then place advertising and affiliate links on those pages. Passive income!

It took a while before I made the first few dollars. It always does. But … as the site grew, so did the income.

And guess what … over those 15+ years, CoffeeDetective has made me over $500,000!

Does that sound interesting? I hope so.

But here’s the thing.

I’ve sometimes asked myself … “Could I do it again?”

2022 is very different from 2006. Could I start over with another site and achieve the same level of success?

Good question!

Of course, the only way to get an honest answer to that question was for me to roll up my sleeves and create a new website.

So that’s what I did. I launched it in January 2021, and the website is called IncredibleMushrooms.

It will take a while before I see any significant revenues coming in. But I’ve already learned some valuable lessons.

Here are just four of them …

Lesson #1: The basics of what made my coffee site successful still hold true.

This was a big question I had in my mind. Could I follow the same process I did in 2006 with my website about coffee?

So far, it looks like the answer is yes.

I’m doing pretty much the same things in the same way. Heck … look at the two websites side by side, and even the basic design is pretty much the same.

Just like I did in 2006, I’m putting most of my efforts into creating really good content … quality information for my readers.

Everything spins out from that.

And yes … just like before … I’m optimizing all my content for the search engines, and for social media.

And I’m making sure it’s not just about the words. I’m adding plenty of images too.

Bottom line … my approach is the same, my priorities are the same, and even my work-process is the same.

And it’s working!

Lesson #2: This is still a great way to build your expertise in all things digital.

One of the big benefits of building your own Money-Making Website is that it builds and refines all your digital writing and marketing skills.

As you write and grow your own website, you’ll become an up-to-the-minute expert in …

Search Engine Optimization

Content Creation

Social Media Optimization

User Experience (UX) Optimization

Plus, you’ll learn how to edit and optimize images for your site. Maybe you’ll become a video creator too!

You’ll just soak this stuff up. It’s part of the website-building process.

This isn’t like book-learning, or studying for exams. These are skills you’ll acquire gradually and organically as you build and grow your own Money-Making Website.

And this comes with a HUGE side benefit.

These are all skills that are highly valued by clients who work with digital copywriters and content writers.

Building my new website has definitely confirmed this is a great way to keep learning and adding to your value as a professional!

Lesson #3: It feels great to be building a portfolio of Money-Making Websites.

One of the reasons I started my coffee website is that I wanted a source of passive income that would keep flowing for the foreseeable future.

In particular, I was thinking about my retirement.

Wouldn’t it be great to build a website that keeps on delivering passive income, even after I retire?

Well, that’s what I’ve built with my coffee website. My plan is to keep that website going even after I officially retire. I’ll be feeding my passion for coffee … AND adding to my retirement income.

Better still, I now have a second website on the go … the new one about the mushrooms. Now I hope to have not one but two sites contributing to my retirement income.

It’s like creating a huge investment fund … but without having to put aside a ton of money every month. In fact, you MAKE money every month.

And yes, given that I’m now much closer to the end of my career than to the beginning … it’s good to know the income won’t stop.

Lesson #4: Creating something new is a powerful and rewarding feeling.

I’m loving this!

I love my coffee site. It has been my loyal companion for over 15 years.

But there is something special about creating something new, from the ground up.

And that’s what I’m feeling with IncredibleMushrooms.

It’s an act of creation … creating something out of nothing … an idea.

And I love that feeling. I love to start new projects.

I love to learn … and boy, have I ever learned a lot about mushrooms and fungi over the last six months!

Yes, this still works!

When I started my mushroom website, I really wanted to learn whether the approach I had taken with CoffeeDetective would still work.

So far, it’s looking good!

The site is already generating a monthly revenue. Not much, but that’s to be expected. It takes time.

This isn’t a get-rich-quick scheme.

But it is a rock-solid way to build your digital creation skills, and make a consistent passive income, month after month, and year after year.

And yes, you can do the same! (I show you how here.)

  1. Hi Nick, I've seen several emails and references to your coffee site over the years.

My big question is what you use for the sites? Do you use WordPress?

About 10 years ago, I tried using WP and found it very limiting.

Then I discovered XSite Pro, and it was wonderful! But XSite Pro is now sort of a dinosaur and cannot make responsive sites.

Then I bought CoffeeCup's software but found it too difficult to master.

And I'm wary of Wix, and other similar products.

    What tool do you use?

    Schalk

  2. I've never found Wordpress limiting, but then I also write my own platforms. And I think something that isn't often considered here is what it takes to build a website that is also intimately connected with a YouTube channel. The 2 can feed each other and generate a much better income on both sides. The video part will require writing of its own sort. The seo is a bit more complex but for 2 or 3 times the return I think it's worth it, and both have lots of room to grow.
