Tim Berners-Lee wrote the message by hand and used a red pen.

This way, he knew it would get noticed and those reading his handwritten sign would follow his simple directions.

The sign read, “This machine is a server. DO NOT POWER IT DOWN!!”

So, why was the sign needed in the first place?

Well, Tim was one of the co-creators of the World Wide Web (WWW). He developed the code for his new web server on a NeXT computer, which at the time was considered top of the line.

And since it was the power source for his Web, he didn’t want co-workers to shut the computer off. So after writing out the sign, he taped it across the front of the computer monitor.

The server contained links to information about how the WWW worked, along with technical details on how to create it.

Tim was a British scientist working for CERN, a European research laboratory that was staffed by researchers and scientists from different countries, working on different projects. At one point, there were more than 17,000 scientists working at CERN from over 100 different countries.

And Tim, in 1990, working alongside fellow computer engineer Robert Cailliau, wrote the proposal to create the WWW, conceiving it as a place where scientists the world over could share information.

The WWW stayed as depository of information exclusively for researchers, engineers, and scientists until April 30, 1993. That’s the day that CERN made the decision to open up the World Wide Web to the public.

That single decision catapulted the WWW into the history books. Today, there are roughly 1.8 billion websites. But that number changes constantly, because every second of every day, a new website is created or an older one is taken offline.

For example, back in August of 2012, over 40 million hostnames were removed from the Web. But by March 2016, the number jumped back up.

And because of this kind of rapid fluctuation, by the time you finish reading this article, the number of websites in existence will have already changed. That’s because nowadays, businesses, organizations, and individuals all around the world actively use websites on a daily basis.
